An Open Letter to the EvE Community...

I've spent the last few hours trying to decide what to write.

The 'Drunk Mittani' episode has (for the most part) subsided; I applaud him for his apology and I'm glad the Mackinaw Miner is okay.

The various responses to this entire fisaco, however, give me pause for thought.

'It's only a game'. "HTFU'. 'Stop playing if you can't take the heat'.

Our words and actions don't suddenly cease to have an impact 'because it's just a game'. The pain that an unkind word can inflict, however unintentionally, doesn't somehow 'end' at our character portraits. Everything we do in our lives, online and off, has real consequinces, whether it's simply making someone quit a game or making them take one final drastic step to end their constant pain.

Most of the people that post responses to this letter are going to say things like 'Butthurt newb' or 'ITT: OP whines about joke', and some of you will without a doubt laugh it off, or laugh at me.

Bring it on.

I'm not afraid of an anonymous Internet troll. What I am afraid of is the way this community has become so desensitized, so incredibly callous, that our response to someone's very real emotional pain is to type 'lol' and pretend it's all a big joke.

Mittani has earned my respect for posting his apology. I think he learned a valuable lesson from all of this, and it won't be soon forgotten.

I hope, in time, that the EvE community can learn that same lesson, and I hope that we learn it before this happens again.

Next time, there might not be someone left to hear the apology.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

Fan Fest went too far.

It is part of EVE. Push it to the limit. It doesn't matter what the case is, it's what people do in EVE. It's why I am down to 3 months a year sub. It's too much.

They actually have mentioned that they intend to make the "2 other tiers" more fun over the course of the year.

The three tiers are:

Harvest
Create
Destroy

And they've only focused on Destroy for a very, very long time.

Before the Apologize of him, i was one of those who wanted him get sentenced for this act.

Now after i talked with the victim, and mittanis apologize official to the playerbase, personally to the victim.
And the ISK he gave the Victim (10+ Billions) i accept his apologize, and i can say i hope some other people learned something new in the ways how they act as adult in this community.
But i guess they just troll, flame and do what they trained themselves to do everyday in this community..

This story is i hope over, when not well, ccp needs to learn from this also in my opinion some things are sandbox and game relevant, others are terms of real life laws depending on the country.

I guess more people say this is my character not me, and they are not roleplayers. Maybe you are roleplayers and yet didn't know it when you make a clear borderline between the personalitys of yourself and the characters you play.

+1 for every OP who makes a new mittani thread

I'd be interested to know the percentage of EVE players who are actually sociopaths; I have a hunch it would be considerably higher than in the general population.

My goal in EVE has always been to find a group of like-minded non-douchebags in a universe filled with arseholes. And then go shoot at the arseholes regularly. Therefore, I have already won EVE Big smile

Heh, made my open letter seem a bit redundant, Ah well. I think we made different points. Anyway... good post.

The only end-game content in EVE Online is the crap that makes you rage quit.

I agree with OP. Everyone has done things they've come to really regret while being drunk. His apology seemed genuine to me, and I can appreciate that he has an in-game persona and an out-of-game persona. It would be very easy to confuse the two under the influence and under the circumstances.

People need to act like human being long enough to understand this. Everyone is entitled to make the same mistake once, I don't believe he'll make it twice.

End of, and I hope he doesn't resign.

I've been banned from so many forums because I go in to EVE mode. They don't take it well. Shocked

Its less "The Game" and more with the "power creep" in societies anonymous psyche. Text and pixels, pixels and text. This has less to do with EVE being hardcore and mean than identifying more and more with this unabashed alter ego we create that is unsuppressed because of these glorious moments of not caring, the desensitized state of invincibility. These are mind games we like to play with ourselves. In a similar strain of liking to scare ourselves with a bungee jump or a scary movie. Yet those are momentary exhilarating moments. Jumping into the skin of a avatar, hours a week, for days within months. Wouldn't some lose a little willpower when faced with a revenue filled with like minded escapists? Not to slip into the avatar but to become it for a weekend. A planned character bringing the universe with him to reality. It was set up, rehearsed and played out. And it was a mistake. Alcohol is a ok excuse, but it goes deeper.
I'd like to think seeing himself in a proper playback sincerely sobered his conscience. Yet he should still be a fun villain to hate.
And I would like to continue hating him.
