New to eve, starter fits?

So brand new to Eve here, literally just figured out there were forums to be accessed regarding questions in game.

There are quite a few statistics with regard to each ship. I was reading something about marshals down the column and was wondering if someone would be willing to give a few pointers out to me about what im seeing.

So Align time has something to do with agility? I'm guessing speed (base modifier) has to do with ship stats and base skill mods off our skill sheet.

The rest of it seems pretty confusing. I watched a video tutorial on transversal and how it applies to incoming dmg from opponent players and or npcs.

What are some basic fits I could make use of while skilling up my alpha pilot? Frigates are a blast to fly. They're also cheap and easy to get on the market.

I have the starting skills and am working on surgical strike and trajectory analysis to 4. I'm basically going to get everything to max skill levels before subscribing to omega status.

Any and all help is appreciated!

I should clarify that I'm looking into fits for both pve and PvP. This is, of course, realizing gallente ships are mostly armor based.

I've read you can fit for shields and I need to look into whether or not this is possible as an alpha. I'm at work doing a 12 hour shift currently so can't fire up my game to check.
