Slaughered while doing hisec data site

Yesterday I lost a Sratios totally. 5B isk at a data site 1 jump from Jita in hisec. First hit I tried to warp off but I blew up just as warp began. Untanked Strat , didn't expect that coming. There were no sleepers when I arrived, after the first cache grab they warped in. Anybody come across this before? I was gone I 3 hits, those r some hardcore sleepers for hisec lol. I didn't save or bookmark, I usually don't in hisec, I guess I'll start now. It was Guristas domain, can anyone tell me what type of datasite that may have been?

it was a ghost site I presume, and one of the hits could have been the explosion that is a timer/can hack fail thing, that can be tanked against.

Ghost site. A tanked stratios should be able to tank it. What the hell that your untanked stratios can be so expensive? And how bad your hacking skills are that you can only complete one can before the sleepers appear in a ship with +10 virus strength?

Ghost 'Data' Sites have a random chance to spawn in all systems and are listed in the Probe Scanner as :

High Sec = "Lesser (Pirate Faction) Covert Research Facility"
Low Sec = "Standard (Pirate Faction) Covert Research Facility"
Null Sec = "Improved (Pirate Faction) Covert Research Facility"
W-Space = "Superior (Pirate Faction) Covert Research Facility"

Note: "Besieged Covert Research Facility" and "Contested Covert Research Facility" are not Ghost Sites. Those are Combat Sites with NPC Battleships.

Ghost Sites have a random timer associated with them that spawns a small fleet of NPC's which web and warp scram as well as shoot 2000+ raw damage at player ships while the cans do AOE (Area Of Effect) explosion of 4000 to 6000 raw explosive damage.

The sites have four cans with one can named differently which usually contains the best loot. The loot consists of various items such as ‘Ascendancy’ Implant BPC, Mobile Depot BPC, Covert Research Tools, Shattered Villard Wheels, etc.

I've run well over a dozen Ghost Sites which have all spawned the NPC destruction fleet at various times. I've had it spawn after hacking the first can, after hacking the second can and after hacking the third can. However I've never been able to get to the fourth can.

EDIT :

Here's a reply I posted on 02-02-2014 about my first experience with Ghost Sites.

5Bil is a pretty expensive fit for an untanked ship, Gankers would most likely have killed you eventually so at least this way your KB is clear.

FYI, a tanked stratios can survive the rats even in a superior covert research facility. Here are tips on running them: Eve University Article

Does anyone know if the following is true:

Ghost Site Timer: 120 seconds from initiating a hack or cargo scan on a container, or 60 seconds upon initiating a hack on the special data site. The timer will also start upon cargo scanning the containers. Source

I usually run the unique can first and then the next based on results of cargo scanning, but will change tactics if above is accurate.

There is not even one stratios loss of that value on zkillboard...

So, today you will learn that ghost site timer IS random and sometimes allow you to only hack ONE can before the rats come in.
Sometimes I can hack every can, sometimes I only have time to hack one - without failing the hack

also, OP may have gone away from the can, thus failing it.

Finally, you MAY have a very hard minigame whith only one way to follow, this one being full of ennemies. It CAN happen too, I already failed a highsec relic in a T2 explo with relic IIand there was no way I could have done it.

If youre in highsec doing a ghostsite you should be in a gnosis tbh.
Explosion and NPCs won't even go through armor.

1 to 2 minutes seems rather short. I've been able to hack up to 3 of the 4 cans sitting in those sites. Also I thought the timer actually starts when you land on grid uncloaked

120 seconds from initiating a hack or cargo scan? 60 seconds upon initiating a hack on the special data site ? Maybe it's referring to the special named can ?

Anyway, going by that players basically should watch the time and wait on hacking the special named can until towards the end of the timer.

The timer is semi-randomized. And a Stratios should not die to the can pop, tanked or otherwise. A well-tanked covops can survive it.

What kind of fit are you running in a covops that can survive the rats and explosion damage and still hack cans?

Also, I find it highly doubtful that an untanked Stratios can survive the site popping. Most people seem to put the damage from the exploding cans at 10-15k pure explosive (you yourself quoted it as 12k in a post a few years ago). At all Vs, an untanked Stratios has 13.6k EHP against explosive. And that doesn't count the damage from the rats, which is considerable but variable depending on what type of space you're in. But even in highsec, the rats would do enough damage to finish the job. Obviously any tank at all would give you enough to survive, but claiming that it shouldn't die "tanked or otherwise" doesn't really add up - unless you have some other numbers to work with.

NPC kill and API not linked. Just because its not on the KBs does not mean it did not happen (Not saying that it did)

I apologize -it was on my main, I didn't realize I was posting on my alt. Meant to post as my main Rumi Shanti.

The kills from NPC don't show up the same tho, but it does show in CFEL corp losses - I am the only dimwit to have lost any ships lol.
I have made 1B+ ISK from raiding these, but you CANT BE GREEDY. Grab one can with your analyzer as fast as you can, and warp to the sun lol. I have only lost 1 ship since then doing these and that was because I forgot to switch my overview back to 'Travel'. Sansha are always Villard Wheels and implant BPCs.

Anyways, an update to that post:
Yes, it was a ghost site. Since that time I have ran a fair many from 'nul to lul' and it is the same setup every time, with a .randomized timer. I run them best in the Astero, and when this event happened I was brand new to the Stratios. What I've learned since then: Just because you can sit in a ship doesn't mean you have ANY BUSINESS flying it. I lost 2 Strats before that message sunk home. We have several more and they will sit at home until such time as I am a real pilot. The Astero is about the top end of what a 1 yr or less player should consider for that sort of role. A few weeks later, I was taught a hard lesson when I lost my geckos, and my all faction fit Strat... The lesson was this:

When you are a newbie you can fly around for a week or two from c6 wormhole space to the grittiest parts of low, and the sketchiest parts of nul, without a cloak up, without fleeing for your life... All you have to do is be overly overt and forward, as if you are either totally oblivious of the danger, or perhaps you are bait. Also, Fleet up with your allies whenever they r nearby, or make random new allies -that takes Capsuleers by surprise hehehe. I finally fell asleep at the wheel at the gate to highsec after ferrying some 30+ jumps one night, and I think I accidentally got caught in a gank x-fire...

So, to reiterate; about 1 in 30 or so of these data/relic sites seem to be ghost sites and require a very agile ship or combat ready tank with good resists, because the DPS is enough to basically 1 shot a strat piloted with no skills and zero tank (which is still a fair bit of tank), and a random timer that usually only lets you get 1 can reliably. Also to note: From my experience so far, blood raiders is a different set of rules. Had a timer pop my Astero IMMEDIATELY once i pressed the analyzer button.

Now I am flying the Orthrus, Worm, Barghest -doing DED 3 and 5/10 combat sites because it is way better isk per hour, good practice for combat, and a whole lotta fun! So far favorite ship in the game is the Orthrus, it fits me like a glove. I take out the Purifier on patrols too but I find babysitting relic sites waiting for hunters to grab their prey -very boring and requires time, a lot of it. Haven't made a single kill here yet but I am still learning with the training wheels on, so...

no ghost relic.
