Am I chopped liver?

I'm flying an armor-tanked Myrmidon...approximately 26000 hit points. I use drones 95% of the time. Level 3 missions are starting to get repetitive. I'm learning the nooks and crannies of the Myrmidon, some tactics, skill levels are decent...getting ready to pop Hulls V, Drones already to level V, Power, CPU, Cap all to V.

I could put my fittings up but I pretty much followed the EVE Wiki recommended fittings with a little tweaking. I can lock at 102km, my drones engage at 89km.

I'm thinking I need a change of scenery and what's all this Factional Warfare stuff...I'm reading that its good ISK and LPs. So I give it a try. First mission (a level III) sends me 19 jumps away into red and orange territory. Well...they must know what they're doing. So I get to jump 6 of 19 and big surprise I'm in Caldari territory and they're not happy. (I'm Gallente.) I pop through the gate and they say something nasty and all hell breaks loose.

After snorting coffee out of my nose they eat through my shield. armor, and structure like butter melting in a hot pan. I barely make it back through the gate...I think I had 3 ticks left on the hull.

Please don't tell me I haven't been playing long enough. I'm probably going on 25 years with video games and they're pretty much all the same. Armor up, get good weapons, learn the skills, and watch for bad guys. And when you don't know something, Google the hell out of it.

Where am I going wrong?

First of all, did you enter an enemy hisec system and linger? Faction navy will chase you around in Caldari and Amarr hisec. Second of all, are you in a player FW corp, or just the NPC one? The player ones are much better and will generally have intel that can alert you to enemy players camping a gate. Also, can you post your fit here? You should probably be getting a lot more EHP out of your Myrmidon, an unfitted one with no skills gets 18.6k EHP.

I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

FW missions are quite different to normal missions in a few key ways.

They are all in lowsec. For this reason I would shy away from level 3 missions in a myrm until you are more familiar with low sec travel and how the missions work. Fit up a Tristan and try level 1 missions also look into how to travel in low sec. If you want to be more adventurous try an ishkur and start with level 2 missions.

As you have found out you are at war with the caldari, you should have just been able to warp off as quickly as you can, you can travel enemy hi sec but need to keep moving.

Copy that. I don't think I lingered but maybe. So, level III in FW is not the same as a regular level III mission? I reviewed the Mission Survivability Report and the actual fight didn't seem too dramatic.

They just seemed to be able to abuse me so quickly. I mean, I barely had time to realize what was going on and I heard that dreaded "I'm eating your hull" sound. Sounds like a smoke alarm with a sinus problem.

It is not necessarily the mission you need to worry about, your mission creates a warpable beacon. Anyone can pay you a visit. An element of speed or pvp preparedness is required.

For a myrm this means medium microjump drive possibly a 100mn afterburner to force your way back to gates when encountering a camp. A defensive neut or two also.

On your regular fit try a large cap battery instead of that number of rechargers.

Fit a Tristan with 125mm rails, drones, microwarpdrive, medium shield extender and have a go at a level 1 mission to start.

Alternatively for fit pvp and start running novice plexes.

It sounds more like you jumped a gate and landed in an incursion system.
You say this happened at gate 6 along your way.

Yes, after I set the destination...19 jumps. I should've suspected I was doing something wrong. So I leaned back, put my feet up started jumping. I wasn't lollygagging either. I can't remember the name but it was a border gate between Gallente and Caldari.

Remember that one scene in Gladiator where the new gladiators are getting ready to go into the arena. They pop the doors open and the one guy gets hammered before he ever leaves the gate. That's what this felt like.

OK AU, I fitted a Tristan as you suggested.

Didn't have enough CPU or POWER for Rails so I'll stick with drones. Picked up my first level 1 FW mission and...its the same story. 26 jumps away...through orange and red territory. How am I supposed to get there. I saw no warpable beacon. Do I have to tiptoe through 26 jumps?

The ISK and LPs are peanuts. I must be doing something wrong.

"Am I chopped liver?"

Yeah, pretty much, but you can change.

Tech 2 resistance mods will greatly amplify the effectiveness of your armor repairer, as well as adding quite a bit more ehp to your ship.

You will get more milage out of a large cap battery vs that mess of cap rechargers, which will also free up mid slots for tackle.
Fitting for cap stability isn't necessary.

If you are going to pvp, neuts are a better option for your high slots; I'm assuming the howitzer on your fit is for getting rat aggro in pve; a target painter works just as well for this purpose, doesn't consume ammo and will assist your drones in hitting their target. Mixing turret types is a bad idea.

Also, gallente ships have a lot of structure; a damage control could work out better than that eanm.

FW missions will always be in enemy space you're fighting a war and the factions need you to take out key targets. A FW mission is not like a normal one normally you only need to kill 1-3 of the rats and gtfo. the distance and mission style means you will be much better off in T3ds or bombers as they can run gate gamps and move around fast.

its also a good idea to take many FW missions at once and do them all. This way you are not constantly going back and forth for each one. And remember in FW you can turn in a mission to any of your FW agents not only the one that gave it to you.

finally join caldari we are more awesome

You haven't been playing long enough. 25 years of other video games doesn't count as a substitute for the game oyu are currently trying to learn, although you may pick it up quicker. Eve is pretty ******* complicated though.

Sounds like you hit an incursion system on the way, they are bad news if you're not fit to deal with it.

Also I advise not going to low-sec unless you are looking to actively pvp. This includes missions.

You're considering FW missions to be like regular missions, especially on the core fact that they should be PvE. FW is PvP territory.

The above message presents my opinions on the topic at hand. If there is a conflict between my views and reality, consider reality to be correct until proven otherwise.

So you got attacked on the jump gate in a Caldari system? If so, it sounds to me like you lingered on the gate. I've flown all through Caldari highsec space as an FW Gallente player without issue. As long as you don't autopilot and you don't linger on a gate or station, you shouldn't have any issue with the opposing faction Navy. Move on through smartly and you shouldn't have a problem.

FW missions involve making alot of jumps. You pick up a mission in Gallente space and then run it in Caldari space. Better to use ships that can reasonably avoid enemies (pirates and Caldari alike) like Hecates and Assault Frigs, and even properly tanked Comets for FW L3.

For FW L4, you'll need to step up the ship up a couple levels to complete the missions.

If you're playing faction warfare you should be in low sec most of the time. 19 jump route sounds like you have your autopilot set to prefer high sec, which sent you through Caldari territory and got you jumped.

If your aim is pve, not pvp then I'd recommend you don't join faction warfare just yet. You're likely to lose several ships while you learn how it all works and if they are all battlecruisers that will get expensive fast.

Should change that Medium armor rep for an ancillary armor rep, sure it needs nanite paste to be uesfull and that stuff can get expensive in large groups, but it will be quiet a bit better/ allot better than just normal armor reps. i havent done much pvp at all and havent even flown a myr (forgot ship name, ill just say the ship ur flying) and in my simulation i managed to get 1100 armor rep per 8.7 sec, 700dps per rally and about 40k armor from memory, cant remember exactly the fit. im not even sure if its a good fit, i could probably tag you the fit ingame in a private chat when i get the chance, or eve mail it to you and you could test it or take a look at it.

That just isn't how Eve Online is. It is not a case of getting good weapons or better ships, Eve is like a game of rock, paper, scissors, it doesn't matter how shiny the scissors the still lose to rock. It is a game where situations are king, and fitting for that situation is required. If you approach Eve Online as a sort of grind to the top, you will fail a great deal.

In any case if you want to run FW missions, a myrmidon is a poor choice. It is relatively slow, missions take place some distance away from agents, you are very easy to catch in a gate camp, and the sort of fits that are great at PVP aren't so hot in PVE for the Myrm. Fits like the triple rep, dual cap booster variety can tank well enough in a PVP situation but, aren't going to let you run that many missions on the cap boosters you can fit in cargo.

The worm works pretty well for level 1-3, it doesn't really do the damage to run l4s quickly though, a group of worms will work though, and are less worried about the webbing frigates than bombers would be (which are probably the most common ship still for l4 FW missions, though less in Gallente/Caldari missions due to the ewar). For l4s if you want to solo, the Stratios, Gila, and VNI are probably the most reasonable choices, all can easily tank the missions with a 100mn AB fit, or a heavy tank fit.

First and foremost though, remember these are assassination missions, kill the commander or industrials or stargate or whatever, don't worry about anything else unless a webbing frigate gets on you. Also, it is much easier to simply avoid the damage with an oversized afterburner than it is to tank all of the damage, when I ran a FW corp, we just used 2-3 10mn shield buffer Algoses and ran level 4 missions with those, we also killed whoever came into our mission to fight us, or at the very least pushed them off. You don't need big expensive ships, just ones that go fast with a low sig and can put out at least 400dps while kiting around.

Also regarding beacons, get an instawarp ceptor, go around to each of the mission systems, pick up a mission, then create a route to all of your mission systems, fly there in your ceptor, right click in space and say warp to the mission, this will open them and create a warpable beacon in space. Once you have opened all of them fly to your PVE ship and go get in that. If you open your mission with your PVE ship, you are letting everyone in local know exactly what you are doing and when, if you open your missions early though, it isn't apparent if it is "your" mission or not when you come back into local.

Also it just isn't worth doing any missions but level 3s and 4s. It is easier just to plex to get your standing up enough to do 3/4s than grinding 1s and 2s for little payout.
