Hello everyone

So i been playing eve for a few days, and i met so many unbelievable twats that exist around here.
I started with mining. Tried to do that in the begining and i have this guy just taking my asteroid all the time. Next day i see people coming near me while mini g so i ran. He then decided to taunt me in which i told him to f off. Then he brought 4 others in the conversation and talked soo much smack about how i suck etc. After that i decided to create a ship and fight people in lawless space. I then decided to ask people what ships are good for new players to start with so they told me to buy a decent looking ship. And then i went down and held hostage by pirates.. asked me for a ransom which i had no money to pay for. Then killed me. After that i thought i should join a larger player group because people on help chat said its much better than flying alone. Good idea im thinking. I go on recruitment chat channel andi see a certain corp that does pvp in lawless space. I started convo wth their leader and he invited me to their group channel. had around 10 players there and they started to ask me how long i played for, my interests etc. So after 20 minutes of talkng i get the feeling that they seem to be happy to let me in the group, but then the leader requested me to give my account number. Im like what? What for? Then he proceeded to tell me how they will keep track of my skills and my inventory.. ok no way..theres no way im going to be fooled by that. I may be new to this
But i aint stupid enough to give out account information out to strangers!

so after telling him to try harder to scam people, all of his buddies just started to link my name on recruitment chat and telling people dont bother with apes like me.. Holy crap these guys are for real! Next day i wasnt doing anything in particular. Bought a destroyer and was gonna test it out until i see what was happening on local chat. Someone was enraged. Cursing like crazy and people laughing at him... i asked whats going and people said gank happened andlinked a kill report.. the victim then went on another angry rant for another hour.

So yeah.. i have no idea what to do at this point. Do i have to be evil and psychopathic to get anywhere in this game? It seems there are no heroes out here. All the best stories that journalists covered involve people screwing friends over.

Thanks for reading!

The corporation you tried to get in probably asked for your API key, which is a common practice in Eve. It helps people keep track of a member, and more importantly check your background to see if you are spying / stealing things.

The API can be customized to disclose or hide part of your information. An API key will not jeopardize your account security (search for eve API on your favorite search engine).

Try to find yourself another corporation if you feel these guys weren't nice enough, but remember that asking for your information for a background check, or to give you advice on what to train is commonplace in Eve, where trust is not easily gained.

Definitely sounds like an API check; as mentioned these are common and harmless.

As you've noticed, there are some... unsavory individuals in Eve. I don't mind, it gives the game character (and damn is it ever fun to shoot them).

Said unsavory individuals are a lot easier to identify if you have their API key. It's for the corp's protection.

In the end, remember that Eve is a game. Some people play to have fun, some people play to win. Everyone will win, and everyone will lose. Just depends what you have happen on a particular day. Those who play to win generally get angry when they lose, and gloat when they win. They're the most fun to pop, which is likely why people were trolling the guy in local like that.

Certainly find a newbro corp. Don't be alarmed if they ask for an API, any newbro friendly corp would be happy to explain what the API is used for and why they need it.

Last thing to leave you with is probably one of the most tried and true pieces of advice in this game:

Don't fly what you cannot afford to lose. Neither Eve nor the large majority of its playerbase are forgiving.

In just a few days you've been robbed of your asteroid, blown up by pirates, felt intimidated, called out a scammer, witnessed some guy cry a river of salt in local , thats the start of your point in this game, have fun playing the rest of it..

It's so fkin funny that this is what new eve players meet when they first start playing. I wonder how many alpha clones will quit within the first 20 min in the next update.

I do not know if the OP is still on, but if you are reading this then I would suggest contacting Pandemic Horde recruitment.

From your post, I get that you are PVP (or more specifically space combat PVP) oriented. So according to what I read Pandemic Horde is new player friendly and they do not require API check (Brave Newbies will ask for your API key).

I am a newbie myself (playing only for about 5 months), but you can contact me in-game and I will try to help you (do not ask for isk, please Lol).

As to the stuff you experienced you have to get used to it. It will keep happening more or less frequently. Read the forums (a lot) to learn how to avoid or confront trouble.

Yeh he quit or sum such, but then it's a bit silly, all he had to do was google API, it's just a bit silly people get so angry with stuff like that, if you have nothing to hide, whats the issue?

They asked for his inventory however that is a standard recruitment scam. Um this guy had a terrible new player experience. I don't blame him for quitting I would have too I think. My new player experience was quite different.

Sorry but there is no excuse for giving full api with everything showing

It's always the same on these forums

Scam this

Abuse that

You older players like myself have a responsibility to stop filling new players heads with crap

We ask for full api with everything showing, yet we have never scammed anyone
