Did an expansion really come out?

The title could seem a flaming one, but it's not, it's mainly a consideration from a new player asking the opinion of other newbies and of veterans.

Here a expansion came out yesterday, I really didn't notice it at all...

...was it exclusively for long time veterans with zero content for new players? Sounds like a really crazy thing for me from a software house, so I'm curious to know if anything for new players will happen after this expansion...

love this game anyway, I'm still learning basic concepts so I'm several expansions back with my gameplay but curious if it was my personal feeling only...

we had a metric tonne of new tools for the sand box.

wait a while, you will see new things happen as the industry starts spitting things out for us to fight over/with.

patience.

CCP didn't give us new content (we players generate the content), they gave us some new shiny shovels for our sandbox.
The sandcastles people build with those affect everyone, not just the veterans.

Quite a few of the new toys (Citadels) take a while to be manufactured.
Give it some time.

Its not really an expansion, more like an update, a patch, etc. Every 6 weeks they update stuff like this, i didnt really notice anything change during my day-to-day playing in the last update either, and im a 3 year old vet.

Dont be put off, it comes around every month and quite a few of us, old and new, dont reallly see much of it in action.

I dont use a citadel, i dont need a citadel, maybe ill build the astrahaus just for fun later on but otherwise wont really bother for now. I dont use carriers/capital ships either. So yeah, im in the same camp as you. Even if CCP were to say "Woops we forgot to impliment everything in this patch", i wouldnt have noticed that they forgot either.

Like everyone else has pointed out unlike other scripted MMOs CCP does not provide us with content. They provide us with tools and sand and we build the content. Therefore when some new tools get added or changed around a bit it can be a while before you see stuff like that in game.

I first started playing this game the day that wormholes were released. Having just come from WoW I wanted to try the latest "content". So I jumped into wormholes right away. For a long time I saw almost no one else in there. By the time they had been out for a year or two you started bumping into other players all the time. Now-a-days it's become difficult to find a wormhole with an empire exit that doesn't have people waiting for inside of it.

So things can take a while for players to adopt in this game. Meaning when CCP makes changes you often won't notice until yourself or other players begin making use of them. That being said the station that I live in did get new lighting effects as well as some concord billboards that I am not happy with. However I live in an outpost so IDK if empire stations got the same treatment.

It most certainly was an expansion this time around. One of the biggest expansions in years.

However, as most things in the cluster are player made, it'll take a few days to really see the effects in space.

I think we have to wait another 2 days before the first medium sized Citadel can be anchored ... just takes time to build. But you will notice then for sure, maybe a bit later in highsec ...

... as said before, CCP usually provides tools, the narrative has to be created by players.

I'm my own NPC alt.

Well. If you were ratting in null sec, totally do able by newbeans, you could have triggered a npc capital spawn. At which pint you announce it into comms, to which the inevitable response of do you have a cyno? Does anybody have a cyno nearby? And you get to watch the hammer fall on that hapless npc.

As it's been said, EVE is a sandbox game, which means that when an expansion (or large patch) is pushed out, the devs don't just push out a complete area with new quests and gear vendor ready for you to spend your ISK to instantly acquire the new stuff on day 1.

We have to train new skills (to unlock the new ships), and we have to get blueprints and materials to manufacture these ships (and stations), then actually wait the time it takes to make these things from scratch, then sell them to you, so you can finally use them.

CCP has advertised all the details in this patch, including fully detailed patch notes, go ahead and click the link from the launcher and read them. There are a lot of changes... as soon as the player-run factories finally spit out the finished product. Takes a while.

It was one of the biggest expansions in years actually but most everything is server side so you didn't have to download a huge file. Unlike with Trinity or Incarna years ago where there were huge overhauls to the game engine and graphics which required very large downloads

There are new types of stations, Citadels, that you will see pop up as people build them and deploy them. Before, you had to own SOV in nullsec in order to deploy your own station and they can not be destroyed. Ever, and you could only have one station per system and the stations were inferior to NPC stations. Player stations had certain roles. A refinery station (better refining ability) , An admisitration station (lots of corp offices), A factory station (better production). The new Citadels will replace these eventually in Null and can also be deployed in Empire an dWH space

There are new Capital ships, Force Auxiliary, which are logistics/remote repair captials. This role used to be filled by Carriers. Carriers and Fighters were completely reworked. Carriers are no longer used for triage, the FAUX does that now and carriers are more geared to deploying and using their fighters. Fighters were totally re-worked in how they are categorized, how they operate, and how they are controlled.

Those are the main things but there is a ton of smaller things that were also updated/changed. They updated the looks of the hangars in stations, they added lots of new modules for capital ships to go along with the new caps and new modules for existing caps.

The only CCP generated "content" I think that was added is NPC rats can now spawn in capital ships in nullsec. People have been posting loss mails from them already. As already stated, CCP doesn't really do many "content" updates. They just give us new shovels to ding in the sandbox

There are some things that can be seen right away.

Tactical view got an update.

You can now get bombarded with visuals while in Dock.

There are apparently different sexes of glasses now for your avatar. Not sure if there are cultural implications of wearing glasses of the wrong gender... the definition of wrong is entirely subjective.

Taxes have gone up. (Do they ever go DOWN?)

If you just jump clones, be prepared to pay through the nose for it.

You can now move to a point in space (this is cool) just hold down the Q button and click on the point you want to move to. I used to fly the ship manually to do this but now I can be lazy.
