The cost to train another character on the same account seems to be the same as the cost to pay the subscription on an account, so why would you train multiple characters on the same account? Why not just have multiple accounts?

Because training something like a trader or a hauler alt only take a couple of weeks.

And after that you don't have to pay for another subscription for some alt you barely log into

Essentially this. The character on a separate account allows you to login to both characters, though. If you ever wanted to move the second account character to your original account, you'd have to pay the transfer fee unfortunately.

Both scenarios provide different options, and suit different players in different ways.

It depends on what you are using the alt for. If the alt is meant to be, or can be played when the main is offline, then there is no reason to have it on a second account.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

One plex for dual character training would easily make 2 of those 14 day planetary interaction alts.

Alts alts alts. Those slots could get used on something you've bought from the character bazaar.

Greets!

An alt also allows you to log on and move about freely if your corp has been war-dec'd. (I'd not have my alt join my corp just for that reason.)

It actually costs MORE to MCT per month.

But as explained above, if you need a character for a specific purpose and it does not need to be online at the same time as your main you can throw a few months MCT training at it and then stop training and still use it forever afterwards for free.

Yes, the value of paying for another alt all has to do with intent and necessity. For me, being able to have two characters online at the same time was invaluable for hauling high value cargo through enemy territory and spying. Also importantly, it gives me the ability to PVE or haul cargo if my corp is war decked. After a while, my alt was able to pay for all my accounts. I recommend having two accounts rather than both on one for the sake of dual piloting.

Most commonly, people train a second alt to either mine or haul cargo while their main deals with important military business.
