Hey guys!

I played Eve for a while like 6-7 years ago and recently came back and started with new char from scratch. After carrier agents and SOE arc, I decided to get into exploration. At first I sticked only to hi sec exploration for practice, while training my skills a bit.

3 days ago I started wormhole(C1-3) exploration, looking for nonsleeper relic/data sites in my belowed rusty Probe. Eventualy i plan to get the Cheetah. I considered training for Helios as it seems to be considered best Cov Ops frig due to slot layout, but its not gonna happen. Its too fugly :P Anyway...

1. My first question is about profitability. I keep reading/hearing ppl are getting tens of millions isk in wh/lowsec per data/relic site on average. But so far( did probably around 20 sites) I usually find loot worth less then 5mil(once I got around 10mil) per site. Am I being unlucky or is it normal and ppl are exaggerating? I managed to blow up fw cans after failed hacking, maybe those were the one with better loot. I have to grab cargo scanner instead of rangefinding array on my next expedition.

2. Second question is about rigs. I thoughts about training rigging to lvl 4 to get the T2 rigs that give +20 coherence to hacking to help me with more dificult cans, before I get archeology/hacking to lvl 4, but I noticed that they require 300 calibration. But all exploration frgates, including Cov ops seems to only have 400 calibration available. So you can fit only 1xT2 or 2xT1 whch gives you same bonus in the end. So whats the point of T2 if you cant fit two of them? Or are they designed for bigger ships only?

3. Another thing, as I love exploraton, it can be a lil bit stressful :p, so I thought maybe I could find myself another activity, on a side, somethign to chill out from time to time, and I thought about hisec combat exploration. I hear it can be quite fun. And since my char is new and low skilled I thought about grabing a frigate.

I really like the Worm, on paper at least (and I have the skills to fly it). I know, probably its not the best idea for low skilled char. But after messing around with fitting I came up with 120 DPS. Probably could get to around 140-150dps with a little bit more explensive faction drones. Would it be enough to run some low level combat sites for now?

Or maybe I should grab something else for now, like racial frigate? Since Im going for Cheetah eventually it would be best to pick a Minmatar ship. Breacher with 2 drones and 2 missile launchers + core probe launcher? :P I read that Minmatar ships arent generally in the best place if it comes to pve.

Why start a new character from scratch? Normally your old one will have a lot more skill points, and there is no reason why you cant train it in explo if that is your current interest.

5 mids of helios is nice . That said, I fly an Anathema. I like it because not only does it look better than the helios. But I can stick expanded cargoholds on it and get a 500m3+ of cargo. Enough to stick another packaged frigate in my hold with mods and take it somewhere deep in null. So I can dual role it.

Another option that isn't as skill intensive, but is more expensive is SOE astero.

1. I've never made a profit at explo myself. I do it because it is fun and creates conflict. Now if I could stop losing ships....

2. T2 rigs are best for t2(edit) ships.

3. High sec combat explo t3 dessie is better than frigate starting out. They have a relatively low sp cost and use many of the same skills as frigates.

4. For PvE range and dps are usually the best qualities in a ship. Minnie ships are great at alpha and speed tanking. Which is not to say that Minnie are bad at PvE, it just takes longer because minnie ships have to get pretty close to be in optimal range, normally minne ships are in falloff which is roughly a 50% dps hit. Other races can fit for long range and just sit in place. Getting into proper range takes time, or staying at range with 50% dps hit takes time, thus Minmatar ships take longer in PvE than other races.

Ok, some comments ...

... a T2 sharpener rig leaves you with one more spare rig slot, and T2 ships have only 2 rig slots

... relic sites are in general more profitable than data sites

... make yourself familiar with the loot drops from the different pirate faction sites, some are significantly more worth than others, so you may search for those (wh is not the best place as the sites are random)

... relic exploration in certain nullsec regions with T2 analyzer and decent scanning skills nets you ~100m/h (it's my main non-PvP income source) if you invest 4+ hours per exploration session

I think Iria means T2 rigs are best for T2 ships.

T2 ships only have 2 rig slots instead of 3 and I believe higher calibration. So that is what T2 rigs were designed for.

I don't do exploration much but I've heard that some people use scanners to see what is in the containers and only hack the valuable stuff and leave sites that have been cherry picked. You will likely have to learn how to distinguish partially completed sites from virgin ones.

T2 ships have also 400 calibration maximum, some ships have less (e.g. Astero). But there are plenty of useful rigs fitting in only 100 calibration (hyperspatials, poly, ...).

Thank you all for answers!

@Iria Ahrens

I had to start with new char becouse i lost access to my old account. It was on my old email adress which name i dont even remember. I had it written down in my notepad but it got "misplaced" somewhere as I moved a lot in last few years.

Intresting stuff about T3 destroyers. I didnt realise it requires so little sp(relatively) to unlock. Its only 11 days, while its around 23 days to unlock T2 frigates. But still, I probably would like to have T2 skills before flying one? Or could I "get by" with T1 skills for a while.
The thing is that Im planning to train for Cover ops and T2 scanning equipment first and just wanted a ship I could fave some fun doing some low level exploration combat, without much training into combat skills. I actually bought the Worm just for lols. Fittet it as well as I could, considerign my skills. Did some combat anomalies and a 1/10 without a sweat. Gonna try 2/10 later ;)

Anyway I was thinking that maybe I should get an Astero instead, while I train for Covert Ops frig. Seems like it would be better than my Probe for exploration/hacking and maybe I would be able to do some of those his sec low/level combat sites when I feel like it.

@Tipa Riot

Are you, by any chance, talking about Sansha space? ;) I remember reading somwhere, when I did my research about exploration, that Sansha space is the best currently for exploration, cos you can often get multiple items(armor plates?) worth like 5 mil each from a single can.

Maybe I should move to Amarr space then :) But tbh I am little bit scared of doing expenditions to null sec(for now). The null sec doesnt look too bad itself. On paper it looks safer than low sec. Correct me if im wrong, but it seems that getting in oud out of the null sec seems to be the hardest part. Lookign at map , it seems that every route to null sec is "bottlenecked" by some system with 50+ ship/pod kills every day. In mot sure if I could make it in and out reliably in my T1 Probe.

What I like about Wormholes space is that it seems empty and its not camped. Maybe I was lucky, but from the tens of WHs I explored so far, my Dscan picked only 2 ppl, one was a miner and the other one was a fellow explorer in Magnate.
But yeah, as you said WH exploration is more of a hit or miss it seems if it comes to rewards.
Yesterday I actually got some better results, brought almost 40 mill from one WH. Got 21mill from one relic site(Sansha!) and another 15 from Gurista data sites. Nothing spectacular, but definatelly better than what I was gettign before.

The question is should I move to some other side of universe with good exploration loots(im in Minmatar/Angel space) and dive into null sec, or shoudl I wait till I get Cover Ops exploration frig and stick to the "safer" WH epxloration for now while I train my skills.

Also, what shoudl I train first? Shoudl I go straight for Covert Ops frig, or rather focus on getting Archeology/Hacking to lvl 5 for T2 analyzers?

The best ships for data & relic sites in nullsec are interceptors. Fit it for >2 sec warpout, then everything else.

You need good scanning & hacking skills though.

I've not been too lucky with exploration since I seem to encounter roaming groups, particularly in WH's. As a new player it can be pretty disheartening to spend 20 mins scanning down sigs, perhaps between a couple of holes and when you finally find a pirate relic site ships appear out of nowhere and annihilate you.

That said, sometimes your attackers may compensate you for your loss if your in a cheap ship. It's also a good idea to send them a quick message saying gf as sometimes they'll give you some invaluable advice on how to minimize the risk factor and stay relatively safe. Some might be complete a-holes and act like children, like this one guy I had who was like "Y u mad bro?" yet my message wasn't even aggressive. Many will just ignore you. You could also just try asking them what you could do to try to avoid a similar fate next time, some pilots can be surprisingly open & helpful.

I would definitely recommend training for CovOps though because it'll only increase your chances of survival and warping cloaked will help you avoid most of the gate camps and roaming groups.

Due to the reasons listed above as well as others there are players who will scan down and bookmark all the sigs in multiple wormholes and then make the rounds hitting D scan waiting for some other explorer to come along. Once you do they sit and wait for you to complete the sites and then de-cloak and blow you up and take the loot.

It's much safer to be in a force recon sitting there cloaked waiting to engage a cov ops frigate fit for max scanning and hacking than it is to be the cov ops frigate scanning and hacking and waiting to be ass-pounded.

Those types of players are typically going to search out higher traffic wormholes. If you can get a few connections away from empire space then your chances of having a site to yourself go up or at the very least the chances of having someone sitting cloaked waiting for you to hack the site go down.

This is also why many players use cargo scanners to check what is in the containers and only hack the high value containers. Many waiting predators will wait until you are hacking the last can.

Also warp core stabilizers are not much of a nerf to a hacking frig as you need to be on top of the cans to hack and loot them anyway. The only real draw back is the increased lock time.

Sansha space may be a good choice ...Blink

My home base is Thera (the "hub" of New Eden, which connects you everywhere via wormholes ... http://eve-scout.com) and I'm flying ceptors for exploration and scouting with almost perfect scanning skills. This is IMO the maximum of freedom and convenience you can get sub T3.

Regarding T2 analyzer ... you want to have at least 30 strength and 120 better 130 coherence to hack the red cores in nullsec without too much lost cans.

If you don't think you can reach null via the gates. Just explore wormholes. Eventually you'll find one that goes into the general area of null you want, while bypassing the blockade entirely.

My main suggestion is to not worry about it. Get a jump clone with no implants, jump to that clone and jump in a rookie ship, they are free. Go through the bottleneck system. They aren't always camped, and if they are you can practice your blockade evasion skils. If the blockade is down for the moment, then you can go around the system creating very important bookmarks, so when you come back later in an expensive ship, you will be able to get past many blockades just by warping to ss immediately instead of using the 1 minute gate cloak to evaluate the situation.

The truth is, most blockades are manned by a bunch of bored people cracking jokes, passing porn links, and doing other things to pass the time. If they don't have anyone on the other side giving warning, all the warning they get is new person in local and the sound of the jump gate activation. So acting very quickly can get one past this blockade. If you wait to check out the system and figure out which celestial is best to warp to, well, they have already stopped cracking jokes and put their game faces on. Then they are ready to counter your moves.

Try contacting CCP and telling them the situation. If you can provide enough clues (what corp was it in? what race? etc), they may be able to track down the account for you and re-activate it.

Something else which I'm also surprised hasn't been mentioned yet, check the zkillboard stats for entry systems you plan to travel into, if you have to and also check the IG activity indicators which you can find via the map. All this info will give you a rough indication of how active each system is in general as well as in terms of PVP. This will help you reduce the risk of running into roaming groups and gatecamps in null, WH space is a different story.

@Erin Oswell

Thx for the tip about zkillboard. I've been using only dotlan maps to see ship/pod kills in last 24h and number of jumps stats. Zkillboard has kill time stamps that will help with determining recent activity better. Sorry for noob question but what does "IG" stand for? :P

As for Wormholes, I keep reading how dangerous it is and im starting to belive I must be extremly lucky cos so far I havent been killed or even attacked in the WH space, and I visit few WHs every evening. My dscan havent picked anybody in a week. It feels so empty, so far at least :)

2 days ago I found a WH leading directly from hisec to nullsec, I decided to go for it, as it was empty I proceeded with scanning. Found a data site and while I was hackign the cans, 3 ppl showed up in local, I paniced at first, but decided to fish the hack. Got 15 mil loot and decided to run back through WH to hi sec. Of course I didnt scan the exit first but stupidly warped at 0. And suprise, one of those dudes was sitting there. I froze for few seconds, he webbed me, but he didnt have warp scrambler it seemed cos I managed to activate my MWD and jump back to high.

@Tipa Riot & Loreen Parker

Im gonna take a look at interceptorst, but I guess you need very high exploration skills and T2 modules to use them reliably.

@Lulu Lunette

Thx for the fit, but I cannot force myself to fly Imicus/Helios. They are so uglyyy :P I just cant. Even if its optimal choice.
Im using this little rusty bugger:

[Probe]
Nanofiber Internal Structure I
Nanofiber Internal Structure I
Nanofiber Internal Structure I

5MN Cold-Gas Enduring Microwarpdrive
Relic Analyzer I
Data Analyzer I
Scan Rangefinding Array I

Prototype Cloaking Device I
Core Probe Launcher I

Small Emission Scope Sharpener I
Small Memetic Algorithm Bank I

Core Scanner Probe I x16

I got cloaking to 3 today so I will get improved cloaking device. Also maybe pick up sisters probes, altho i don thave problems with scannign down sites.
I got my Archeology/Hacking to 4. currently sitting on 90 coherence and 25 virus strenght. So not that great. But I got a bit better at the minigame it seems, cos I havent blow up a can in 3 days :)
Loot wise its been getting better. Yesterday I found a Sansha relic site that gave me 70 mil :) Highest one so far.

Also a bti offtopic, I bought myself a Worm and Dramiel for some hi sec combat sites fun :P Yep, i know, probably not best idea for a newbie with low skills but wanted to try them out, see the gameplay and just have some fun.

I actually had a tons of fun with Dramiel yesterday doing some anomalies. Gonna try doing some 1/10 - 2/10. Probably gonna lose it heh but it so fun to fly, that speeed! I eventually plan to get Svipul for hi sec combat exploration. Maybe Dramiel will be a good for practicing some combat mechanics like speed tanking and all this stuff with optimal ranges/fallof/tracking etc.

No problem, IG stands for 'in game'. Wormholes are more dangerous because you don't know who is in there at any given time, since people might hide out of dscan range in a cloaky pvp Astero or some other cloaky, wait till they see you hacking and pounce. As long as your proficient with your bookmarks and have the right fit, you should be ok. Most of the times I've been shot in WH's is usually because it's been my own fault and I've got too careless or too confident, sometimes it's just bad luck. It also depends on when you do your WH exploring but yeah luck plays a big role.

That said I've had my best cans in WH space, 30m in one can and my best so far has been a near 50M BPC. Relic sites are better to do but harder to find, some people ignore Data sites but 10-15m a few times an hour will soon add up.

Wormholes just for travel are 99% safe, in the thousand times I jumped through a hole (not looking for trouble) there was only one critical encounter I remember when by chance I found the new home of Brave's wormhole devision with a bubbled entrance and a fleet waiting for intruders, but made it back safely. Most WHs are "empty", even Thera entrances are rarely camped these days.
