How to find most efficient Multi-Waypoint Route

There used to be a simple button in the autopilot section of the map which allowed one to simplify the path between multiple waypoints. This feature seems to have been removed from the game. Is there another way I can find the most efficient path between a large number of waypoints, preferably 12 at a time?

"Prefer shorter" no longer there?

Always wonder: Prefer shorter option counts only jumps, or takes into account the distance of the gates in system?
ie: I have a two 3 jumps routes, but the first one have the gates close to eachother, and the second one have 20+ AU warps between the gates.
Which one would be choosen by autopilot?

optimization of the route still works in game (just checked it myself). You need to generate your route adding each point of interest using "add waypoint". then, when the route will be ready, left mouse click a button which looks like A near the route and choose second option at the bottom "optimize route" - vualia.

as far as I heard this function had (and probably still has) problems when you need to optimize route between more than 10 waypoints. Try to avoid exceeding 10 waypoints therefore.

Like the OP, I thought the option used to be available on the map under autopilot functions, but it seems to have been removed (neither the old nor the new map seem to have it) and put, as Padegejas says, under the autopilot functions top left of the screen. Makes sense I guess.

As to how the autopilot plans routes, I suspect the answer is badly. I quite often find that the route it gives from A to B goes through different systems to the return route B to A.

On the subject of the autopilot, it's a good tip to always use it to show your route, even if its just a few jumps and you know it well. In a moment of panic, that yellow highlighted gate that is pre-selected can save your life. So always use your autopliot to show your route ... but never let it fly your ship for you. It should only be a route planner.

Yes!

I had a bunch of waypoints once and clicked optimize anyway. Pretty much the freeze client button.

Shortest route = shortest distance in light years.

Note than you can re-route and change waypoints by clicking on ones you don't like.

The problem was first formulated in 1930 and is one of the most intensively studied problems in optimization. It is used as a benchmark for many optimization methods. Even though the problem is computationally difficult, a large number of heuristics and exact methods are known, so that some instances with tens of thousands of cities can be solved completely and even problems with millions of cities can be approximated within a small fraction of 1%.[1]

Perhaps some optimization is possible :P

My biggest annoyance is creating a nice long waypoint list... then accidentally clicking "Set Destination" on the final waypoint and blowing away all my waypoints and causing my dogs to startle at the howl of frustration coming from me...

But the opimize route function will create the shortest route in light years, and if you autopilot the quickest route to your med clone.

There is no such thing as a fair fight...

If your fighting fair you have automatically put yourself at a disadvantage.
