All Purpose Mission Ships

I have slowly been getting into Mission Running again and was wondering which ships is considered the best 'all-round' for mission running. Now I am aware that different ships shine in different situations, however I do not want to wait to train the different ships to have a full toolbox, having a fleet of different ships is also prohibitively expensive right now.

So far I have been flying around in Gallente Drone boats, and for the most part I really enjoy it, until I have to make the jump to level 4's and fly the Dominix. Unlike most people, I do not really have a problem with its look, it just feels sooooo slooooow. So far I use:

Tristan for level 1 & 2. Great fun and I like the speed.

VNI for level 3. Also fun and fast.

Dominix for level 4. Yuck.

I do not run missions for one faction only, I am trying to see how high I can get opposing factions (boring I know, but I like the challenge and if I make some ISK, then that is a bonus).

I have zero skills in missiles, so Worm/Gila/Snake is out of the question currently. I have however been considering the Dramiel/Cynabal/Machariel line as an alternative, however I do not know how they do against the different factions.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

TL/DR I want to run missions for different factions but do not want to change ships all the time. What is my options (other than Gallente and Missile ships).

Since you've been considering it:

Machariel:

1.) warps like a frig
2.) selectable damage type
3.) ???
4.) Profit!

If you are trying to be efficient and enjoy paying constant attention the Mach line is the path.
If you are in no rush and may occasionally need to not pay attention for a moment or two possibly more, go the Rattler line.

Vargur if you prefer a more sedate pace over the mach.

Variable ammo, ecm immunity, easy to fit, easy tank, etc.

To disclaim, I'm sure a mach is great, but right now, I use a worm when I need level 2's, and a gila for 3/4. You don't need crazy missile skills for either, most of the dps is drones in these two ships. Only moving up to the rattle can your missiles be on par with your drone dps.

Machariel is likely your best bet. For lower level missions you can either play around with the Cynabal or, if skills happen to allow, the Sleipnir. The latter really isn't worth the train in and of itself -- you'd be better off going straight for a Mach -- but the damn things gets the same damage with arties as the Cyna does with ACs.

With drones as beastly as they are right now, Rattlesnake appears to be the king of the PvE hill. Use that for L4's once you've reached that point. To use it to maximum effect requires a lot of training. You'll need to train into T2 Cruise Missiles and T2 Sentries. With the drones, you're going to end up wanting to train up all the racial drone skills if you want to select optimal damage type for the mission rats you're killing. You can just use Warden II, since Kin seems to be the universal hole and they have the best range of all sentries.

On your lead up to L4's and the Rattlesnake, prioritize ships that will benefit from what you're training - i.e. drone boats. Vexor for L2's and a Myrmidon for L3's. Both will be Railgun fitted, but you damage will come predominantly from the drones.

Don't bother getting Navy Issue or Faction boats along the path. L2's and L3's are easy in stock T1 ships with T1 fits. Besides, if you're just trying to b-line to L4's, whatever you fly along the way will just be a stopgap ship that ends up sitting in your hangar.

Once you get to the Rattlesnake, preferably cruise missile fitted with T2 sentries, you'll find that only Guristas rats will actually be able to hit you once you get out beyond 60km. Guristas being the only rats that use missiles to any significant degree. Warp in, open up some range. You start pelting the battleships while the drones take care of the smaller stuff. Focus down the battleships that are left and go make a sammich. Profit.

Yes, Machariel and Rattlesnake are the best choice, IMHO.

But Machariel requires very good personal combat skill of a pilot (close range fight, easy to make a mistake) plus studied Gallente and Minmatar battleship to 4 at least. Not to mention a lot of supporting skills to not run you capacitor out and be able ot fit all necessary modules.

Rattlesnake is even slower, than Dominix. And you need good missile skills to use it. Plus two racial battleship, again.

So I fly my Dominix for missions ;) Cause I need almost nothing in cargohold when I travel from one mission hub to another. Point of Dominix is drone optimal range bonus. So range is your tank and I am OK with just 2 very universal defense modules. All I need to swap before mission is type of drones to shoot weak spots properly. No additional ammo. I have optimal range of 150 km with warden II and can shoot even elite frigates with garde II. Cause I have 3 omnidirectional tracking links.

Another big plus of Dominix is that it is no gank magnet.

With perfect skills you can apply 950 DPS at 40 km but still over 600 DPS from 150 km as well.

Do you mind sharing your fit? I am using the e-uni wiki fit on my Domi, so maybe I just need something better.

You can fit a snake like a Gila, as a brawler, using faction heavies or a gecko with rapid heavies while you train into other options. But I stand by the Gila as being a great level 4 boat.

OP do you mean 'slow' in movement of the ship or clearing the npc's? If it's the former then a Mach would be a great ship to have.

If it's the latter then maybe you need to buff your skills or reduce your tank. Put your Domi into EFT and check the DPS output for your char and compare it to 'All V' DPS. If it's a big difference there is something you need to train.

The Rattlesnake is king of DPS right now, but it's going to be a long train if you don't have any missile skills.

Just for comparison: my Rattlesnake does about 1300-1400DPS up to 96km from missiles and drones.
No faction/deadspace stuff used for DPS.

Gila, Rattle, Machariel, and the list goes on and on so here is my take on it.

II have flown everything listed so far in this topic and they are all great for some things, but they are all lacking in others.

The Mach and Vargur are both great but there much claimed advantage of damage selection is still limited compared to drones and missiles so that tends to indicate the use of a drone or missile boat or the Rattle that is both.

Ship speed can be a factor for some mission styles so that would give the Mach a definite edge.

Preferred engagement range has a huge affect on this as well. With tracking issues the turret based ships are at a disadvantage at close to medium ranges, yet at longer ranges the missile ships are at a disadvantage due to flight time.

But perhaps the single most important factor is personal preference. I can run missions significantly faster in my chosen ships than my son can but he still prefers his Kronos and the short range blasters. I have proven over and over in game to a mission partner that the missile / drones ships are better against serpentis and gurista ( our primary NPC's) than his Palidin yet he takes it anyway because it is what he likes.

If you hate flying a ship why bother no matter how much faster it may be, and teh opposite if you enjoy flying any one ship then what does it matter if it is not the best or fastest?

To continue with the personal experiences for a single ship option and based on my experiences since I to like to keep all of my faction standings equa we have this.

For short to medium range engagement style across all NPC races and in all regions of space I have found the missiles / drones ships to give the most consistent performance. Notice I did not say best I said most consistent.

For a longer range engagement style there is a definite advantage to the turret based ships and in that case the Vargur is my preference.

For missions blitzing whether is it level 3 or 4 then the Mach is in my opinion the hands down winner for best ship.

And so we come back to where this whole debate usually starts and that is with some form of the "what ship is best" question.
And the short answer is whichever ship / ships you can afford and like to fly is THE best ship in the game.

Something like this:
[Dominix, range tank]
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Federation Navy Drone Damage Amplifier
Shadow Serpentis Large Armor Repairer
Damage Control II
Federation Navy Drone Damage Amplifier

Large Micro Jump Drive
Sensor Booster II, Targeting Range Script
Federation Navy Omnidirectional Tracking Link, Optimal Range Script
Omnidirectional Tracking Link II, Optimal Range Script
Omnidirectional Tracking Link II, Optimal Range Script

Tachyon Modulated Energy Beam I, Imperial Navy Multifrequency L
Tachyon Modulated Energy Beam I, Imperial Navy Multifrequency L
Tachyon Modulated Energy Beam I, Imperial Navy Multifrequency L
Drone Link Augmentor II
Drone Link Augmentor II
Drone Link Augmentor II

Large Drone Scope Chip II
Large Ionic Field Projector I
Large Drone Control Range Augmentor II

Garde II x5
Warden II x5
all sort of combat drones

Rattlesnake and Machariel are better, no discussion here. But they are also more skill demanding and usually gank magnets. If you downgrade guns, you do not need any faction modules on this fit and you will still be doing just fine. Guns are needed against small targets. When sitting 100+ km from frigates you have enough time to hit them even with unbonused large guns cause they are burning toward you at 0 transversal speed and their tank is paper thin. This way your sentry drones can keep working on heavily tanked targets.

This^ guy ^ knows his ships. Mach is great but you need a noctis to follow it IMHO, so Vargur is my favorite "one ship for all missions" ship.

Paladin sucks Vs. Angels but Vargur is great against Sanshas. Golem is a good "everything" ship too but the Vargur can easily fit a nano in the low and a MWD in the mid even with the MJD. I can only get an AB on a Golem.

Also EWAR immunity is something the Mach doesnt pack, although if you spend some cash on the tank it can fit a module or 2 just for that.

Honorable mention is the typhoon fleet issue, but you have to swap setups for different missions. Its a good ship to be based out of one base with. And its very skill intensive.

Very, very unlikely.

Something to keep in mind about Eve is that Isk per hour is an ambiguous gage. You have to be able to squeeze an entire mission into your time played to make ANY extra ISK. Being able to do a 30 minute mission 5 minutes faster means you need to have 3 solid hours of playtime before you see a penny.

That *may* no longer be an absolute advantage of the Mach once citadels come out.

Put medium citadels in "every" system that an agent will send you, put a fitted mission ship in each one, and use an interceptor w/warp rigs to travel from the agent to the mission system, swap out interceptor for mission ship, and swap back to interceptor to fly home once mission is done.

This strategy could potentially put the Rattlesnake over the top in terms of "best" level 4 mission runner.

Sounds good but will it be economically feasible? The XL will cost as much as an outpost, I admittedly don't know what that is (20-40 Bil?) but it can't be cheap. I guess it will depend on how the medium scales down in cost.

You could just do this now then with a station or a pos. I suspect the citadel will need fuel to keep it up, so there will be a cost for convenience.

mach even with meta 800ac's is great, otherwise aim for a marauder like the golem.
I really can't see a panther working better than a palladin, maybe for on specific mission or if the palladin pilot is a noob.
RS also does great if you don't have great missile skills.

... What next ??
