Small ship carrier

I'm not entirely convinced that this would be a good addition to the game myself, but it's been floating around in my head for some time and I thought I'd bounce the idea off the fine people in F&I.

The Orca is way too fat for my purposes; I usually just plastic-wrap up a few frigates and throw them in the fleet hanger of my DST, plus a bunch of unfit hulls and fittings. Basically I would like to see a DST-style ship carrier, something that could carry a destroyer (or two, maybe?) or two frigates along with a cargo hold somewhere around 3000m3. No ship fitting services, no ore bay, just a DST with an SMA instead of the fleet hanger.

Apparently you can put fit and rigged ships into a fleet hanger, so a DST already fulfills this roll. How about a ship with a 250,000m3 SMA?

Alternatively, a low-slot module that converts a fleet hanger to an SMA.

Bad idea? Intruding on a niche?

If you fill up the low slots on an industrial ship with cargo extenders, you might be able to fit two dessies in it. That will likely depend on which indy ship you use and what kind of cargo extenders you use, mind you. I have a Hoarder with three meta3 (maybe meta4) cargo extenders, and I can carry two or three frigs. If it helps give you an idea, I think it can hold two Rifters or three Slashers. If you get one of the indy ships that has more cargo space than a Hoarder and slap a few shiny cargo extenders on it, I bet you could fit a dessie in it. I don't know if this help at all. If all else fails, set aside a few mil for a courier contract with Red Frog Freight. In my experience, they are a very reliable, and relatively cheap, alternative to hauling your stuff around on your own. They even have Blue Frog and Black Frog for lowsec and 0.0 deliveries, but I think they charge a bit more for trips like that.

Its very close in concept to the bowhead built small, so maybe let that larger version of the same niche of ship carrying shake out and revisit.

Was more a wish-list item for a nomadic style of play and also because the whole idea of plastic-wrapping fit frigates is just too noodly in practice. I agree, though, I want to see how the Bowhead pans out.

Totally. Going to be getting my BPO right after downtime on patch day

ORE Transport ships would be kinda nice since some ppl dont want to destroy rigs or waive their insurance on a ship just to repackage it especially when dealing with t2 rigs

Uhh... If all you're worried about is small hulls, the. Why not just repackage them and toss them in an Indy ship?
I did this earlier today with an itty 5...
Didn't care about t1 small and medium rigs.
Was able to stuff 3 frigs, a noctis, and a ton of modules into the hull...

Rigs, for one, insurance, for two. Right now I can fit two frigates in a DST if they're plastic-wrapped but, as stated, it just doesn't seem right (has nothing to do with the 10k ISK for the contract, either). Either way, ship might not be needed and we'll want to see how the Bowhead plays out, too. But I believe there is a niche to be filled with a DST-sized ship transport below the Orca (or maybe I'm the only one in it? v0v)

I was fixing to say, why not just a transport class ship with a hangar bay instead of a hold
Don't know what size you'd need...
50k maybe?

That's ... literally what this thread is about.

I realize that, but I don't know is such a small m3 is really worth it...
You'd need to be able to carry at least two cruiser class ships and 20k standard hold...
Otherwise,it's not really that useful for a lot of people.

Makes sense. That would end up being something I wouldn't use (I think an SMA that big would warrant a slower align and warp speed than even a DST) but it's probably a better ship for the game.

Last time I checked, you were able to put fitted ships inside the fleet hangar, at least in the Orca (as long as they are not bigger than the fleet hangar capacity of course). Have you tried that in a DST? Because if that works and what you're asking is a ship with a SMA the size of the DST's fleet hangar, then it would have no added value to have that extra ship in game.

That said, if you're pointing to an SMA between 100k and 250k (at max skills), then I would actually like to see that happening. It would make logi pilots in incursions that have both basi and scimi delighted as they would no longer need a fat orca to move 2 cruisers around or go back and forth between old and new focus to get both ships to the new focus.

P.S. - This would also give another utility to the ore industrial skill besides being a prereq for the bowhead for those that don't have any interest in salvaging.

Good lord man, why didn't someone tell me this earlier? WHERE HAS MY NATURAL CURIOSITY GONE?

Confirming this works with a DST.

This thread is now about a ship with a 250Km3 SMA and sensible skill requirements.
