A ship for all your scanning needs

Ok, so even though I've played for years I've never really dipped into scanning.

I run lvl 4 missions, I have orca and hulk alts and I want to start scanning down sites, Ideally grav sites but any just for fun.

I want to have a dedicated scanner ship as I will be doing within a coupel of jumps from my "home" system and flying back to switch ship.

What ship and skills would you guys recommend for easiest/fasting scanning abilities?

Many thanks guys.

A ship with scanning bonus perhaps.
Maybe even invest in scanning skills if you feel 1337 enough?

Well this is what I intend to do, I just dont know what skills will benefit the scanning.

Is a Heron the best choice or are there better choice? As ISK isn't really an issue.

Get Astrometrics 4, Astrometric Acquisition/Pinpointing/Rangefinding all to level 3. Get a heron, with level 3-4 in frigate. That's good enough to start.

You can then upgrade to level 4 Astrometric Acquisition/Pinpointing/Rangefinding, level 5 Astrometrics, and use a covops scanning ship as time allows / need dictates.

If you're gonna be really pro about it. Get asometrics V and learn how to use deep space probes.

Heron for highsec, Buzzard for low/null/WH, two Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I rigs, Sisters Core Scanner Probes

If you want to splash out a bit more, Sisters Core Probe Launcher, and Poteque Pharmaceuticals 'Prospector' implants (PPG for time, PPF for deviation, PPH for strength).

And if you plan on getting Astrometrics V: Deep Space Probe scanning guide

For a ship, any covert ops or T1 equivalent will do. As mentioned, throw some Grav Cap. rigs on it.
Edit: You'll need covops 4 to make the covops scan bonus better than the T1 equivalent ship.

As for skills, these are the core scanning ones:
Astrometrtics - +1 probe per level, you want at least 5 probes and as mentioned, train it to V to use DPS's
Astro. Pinpointing - Reduces scan deviation. Train this for more accurate results.
Astro. Acquisition - Increases probe strength. This is a must.
Astro. Rangefinding - makes your probes scan faster, not really necessary but its nice to have.

If you're sticking to highsec, you can probably skip the sisters stuff and implants if you want, as highsec sites are generally pretty easy to scan down. But more scan strength never hurts.

T3 with scanning subsystem.

Seconding this. Its really easy to get the scanning bonus to 50%, and you won't have to swap back to a combat ship to actually run the site. If you've been playing for years the price shouldn't be a problem.

Good info.

However, the descriptions for Astro. Acquisition and Astro. Rangefinding should be switched.

To the OP,

T1 starter Frigate, Launcher and Probes reward gained from the Exploration Career agents is a good ship and can complete High Security Radar, Mag, very small Anomalies and the Hideout signatures.

T2 Covert Ops Frigates have great scan bonus but lack on defensive and offensive power. They are quick and can operate Covert Ops Cloaking modules. Best in a small gang fleet or switch ships for the higher level exploration sites.

T2 Force Recon Cruisers are an excellent 'Poor Mans' all in one exploration ship for doing High Security Exploration. They can complete all mid level exploration sites easily and can operate Covert Ops Cloaking modules for the last expedition stage in Low Security. No ship scan bonus so would be good idea to fit up 1 rig slot with T2 Gravity Capacitor Upgrade and use the other rig slot to improve the ships defensive tank.

T3 Strategic Cruisers are the top of the line all in one Exploration ship. With various sub systems fitted can just about go anywhere and tackle a lot of different sites. Best to have high skill levels and excellent fit up with these ships.

Check out the Exploration Career Agent, complete the mission series and try out exploration with the basic equipment they give. If you're just going to be looking for Grav sites, that'll do just fine for High Security Exploration. Only takes a few days to train up Level 3 and 4 exploration skills, fit up SoE equipment, rig up ship, maybe even get a Hardwiring implant for scanning, should have no problems getting 100% signature locks. If you do like Exploration, then start with a Force Recon Cruiser as your basic all in one high security exploration ship..Just remember that Hideout sites are Frigate class and Vigil sites are a bit tough.

For highest strength get a probing cov ops with 2 Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade rigs, sisters probe launcher and sister probes.
Even at cov ops level 3 its better then the t1 probing frigates because of its 10% skill bonus instead of frigates 5%.
Its also better then the t3 for a simple reason: you wouldnt scan strength rig a t3.

If isk isn't a problem, then here is my all propose exploration ship. Scanning them down and running them.

Tengu, Exploration
Tengu Offensive - Accelerated Ejection Bay
Tengu Propulsion - Intercalated Nanofibers
Tengu Defensive - Adaptive Shielding
Tengu Electronics - Emergent Locus Analyzer
Tengu Engineering - Augmented Capacitor Reservoir

Sisters Expanded Probe Launcher (Sisters Core Scanner Probe)
Salvager II
5x Heavy Missile Launcher II (Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile)

Pithum C-Type Medium Shield Booster
Corelum C-Type 10MN MicroWarpdrive
Analyzer II
Codebreaker II
Pithum C-Type Magnetic Scattering Amplifier
Pithum C-Type Kinetic Deflection Amplifier

Damage Control II
2x Ballistic Control System II

2x Medium Capacitor Control Circuit II
Medium Capacitor Control Circuit I

The set up here is for Guristas and Drones mainly. (Em: 67%, Ex: 67%, Kn: 90%, Th: 87%). No cloak at the moment so yes I'm just doing Highsec at the moment. Even so in the past I have found several Pithum C-Type Medium Shield Boosters (~350Mil) hence the reason I have one fitted Smile

Nice fit up.

Don't forget to upgrade the 2x Ballistic Control System II modules into Faction modules, like Dread Guristas or Caldari Navy. Get more DPS and use less CPU.

Drone and arch sites are literally useless (particularly true in high sec). I'd drop the mag and analyzer for target painters or something.

Thanks.

As for the extra DPS from having a faction Ballistic Control System, the ones you mention give a 2.5% bost each and I don't think the 100Mil each price tag to be worth it honestly. As it is I've sacrificed a Missile Launcher to fit a SalvagerBig smile. I do see the CPU advantage but I already have 76 CPU free with this fit so that's not a problem. I could swap out all the faction stuff and put in T2 with out a problem if I wanted to.

I agree with you on the Drones and Archaeology sites as they stand now but after the patch today they may be better, here's hopingSmile.

The OP was after a good ship/setup for exploration, the fit I posted was for a general Highsec, Caldari Space type sites. It can be easily customised to suit a particular style of Exploration, there is 76 CPU and 107 PG free to play around with.

Personally I like having the Magnetic Amp fitted, it helps with other players, the same reason I carry EM Missiles as wellBig smile.

I doubt high sec ones will be anything less than useless. Low sec and null? We'll see what they're dropping but again, I doubt it. Having sites drop things that are more readily available from other sources is a "durp, we have no idea what we're doing" idea.
