Google docs and Item Prices

I am new to google docs and looking to create a sheet for production of a couple of items The maths side of it i understand =SUM(a1*b1) ect but im wondering whats the best way of updating prices of items/materials

I was thinking of using =xmlimport but thats as far as i have go so far :)

If it is the way to go is any one willing to help a Newbro out
