Ideas for collectible in-game Tournament cards

While digging through data dumps from Buckingham client I have came upon these strange items:

http://pozniak.pl/explorer/search.php?q=NEO+YC+114

Of course as usual this caused some heavy speculation ;-) As it turns out, Retribution will bring collectible in-game cards for New Eden Open teams, bringing one more level of immersion to the "recently discovered" e-sport in EVE.
While I have never collected baseball cards, this sounds like a great idea and I'm sure there will be quite a lot of players willing to collect such unique items (EVE already has many rare ship and item collectors, take famous Entity for example).

Drackarn and I have exchanged some ideas on Twitter regarding this find, and I think these cards should receive more attention, especially from the roleplaying community. Of course there will be voices "we don't care about stupid cards and RP, GTFO". If you are about to write such hate post, don't. You will only waste your precious time and keystrokes, because this isn't a thread for you.

One of the ideas we had is to create such cards for AT X as well (and if these items get popular, I see no reason why previous tournament teams shouldn't get their own cards as well). Another idea is to create links in the item description to the event web page itself (or an eve wiki page), so players can immediately find out more about the specific tournament. What can such cards be good for? You could for example use them to decorate your CQ at some point.

That's enough from me, what do YOU think?

I should also point out since you can't see it on that web site, and this took some manual effort, that all of the team members are links to their show info along with the sponsor being a link.

Just a little thing but I think it makes a big difference to the awesome. :D

Without being more opinionated , I think it's a nice honorable way to enjoy the Competitions but I'd be more concerned about the level of saturation.

If it has a couple of cards only issued to the players they might not be sold.

If there are too many cards they might end up in one hand

I agree here.

Cards shouldn't be too rare, or they will never be sold. They should reach the masses, but shouldn't be too common either, or no one will really care.

EVE-MON, GOTTA POD 'EM ALL!

Seriously though, I quite like this idea. I would also suggest giving the participants 'foil' versions of their cards.

Haha, sounds a bit like Magic: The Gathering. I like that idea though. Foil card is like a medal; you can just keep it in hangar until it becomes worth billions (or until it becomes actually useful). If someday walking in stations allows CQ decoaration and showing it to other pilots, this will be an excellent trophy.

The problem with foil versions is they would have to be a separate entry on the market and separate items. Maybe next time we can find a decent way to do it though.

oooOOOOOooooo,

Maybe you can redeem it in-game somehow and get it in RL?

maybe krull might drop some x-rated ccp picture cards of the dev team enjoying a night out in his pleasure dome, like 1 in 10 million chance or something? you know like he was going to use the pictures for black mail at a later date?

Hes got to have more going on in his please dome than the silly princess.

Hmm...

Maybe someday (in the far future when we can interact on stations) it would be cool to add some stats/abilities to cards and make decks to battle other players with; Lots of people love collectibles you can actually do something with!

Plus, each alliance tournament would introduce new cards. It would be pretty cool!

Imagine, if you will, a casino or arcade in jita where you can go to spend/win isk in a nice bustling player-filled environment...
There would be casino games, a section for the collectible card game, etc... All multiplayer and adding a new level of I-Am-Really-In-This-Universe depth ;P

Also, on a side note...
PLEX-4-PIZZA! ---> Link up with pizza companies that allow online ordering, and allow us to convert plex into pizzas! (using a $17 plex to get a $12-13 Pizza, CCP still wins, right?)

I have suggested a casino/gaming hall in stations in a couple of WiS threads. Love the idea of playing an EvE based card game against others in between ratting runs into null.

I think a game similar to magic the gathering based on EvE fleets could work. It would be cool to pick up 'booster packs' of trading cards in stations, open them, find the rare ones and make up decks. Trading them in a seperate WiS only market too. Maybe betting on winners in card tournaments...

As for 'Plex4Pizza', I know it cannot happen. It would be using a virtual currency to procure real world goods. There are a ton of laws about that sort of thing. Now, Plex4Merch is another idea all together. How about paying for limited edition EvE merchandise with PLEX?

plex for pizza is bad for ccp because its money leaving there accounts.

Redeeming plex for ccp merch however ought to be ok.

but magic man wow brings back memory's...

don't want to stroke her ego, but a "Spaceship Barbie" card ought to be considered.
with stats like 1 trit for all / 1 of your best cards.

not really a poker or gambler, but in game betting on some form of official frame work (to combat fraud) should be something the devs should think about.

It would be like the holographic arenas in yu-gi-oh, I would summon a avatar that looks like micheal bolton who would be forced into combat with soundwave. Bolton would have a defense and attack of 0 though, he doesn't look to strong.

Having an Eve collectible card game that played like Magic: The Gathering would be so epic.

They could even make Booster packs a rare drop from DED sites, with packs rated 1 through 10 dropping in the corresponding DED, with the card powers scaling to match... ;P

Alot of work for the devolopers, though.

Damn mate, this idea is so neat! Would make a great game for walking in stations :D Dunno if this wouldn't be better than SLAY in Dust ;-)
