Hello.

I already posted a similar message in the Assembly Hall forum but I've been told that it deserved to be here too.

Since I saw the "Smart Filters" that have been added to the Inventory window (devblog article), I told myself:
"it would be really cool to also be able to filter the overview window".

I know that Overview tabs can be configured the way the player wants them to be but it would be nice to be able to filter the Overview in real time. Thus, the Overview window could have two new Filter features : the Smart Filters and the Quick Filter box.

1. Smart Filters

Here is a mock-up image that shows what it could look like:
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/7760991overviewclosed.png

Now the same image but with the Smart Filters menu expanded:
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/3098782overviewexpanded.png

As you can see, the Smart Filter menu would show nine filters but more could be added since that part of the window would have a vertical scrollbar...

And as soon as the player would click on a filter (that he would have previously created), the overview would be immediately filtered:
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/5370663overviewopenstargatechecked.png

Here with "NPC" also clicked:
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/6287224overviewopenstargateandNPCchecked.png

2. Quick Filter box

The second Filter feature would be the Quick Filter text field:
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/7268025overviewFilterTextField.png

I think this would be really useful, especially if the player is mining and wants to display only one kind of asteroid.
Of course it could be used in other situations.. (for example searching for a "yatch" or "bunker" in the Default tab).

3. Filters saved on each tab (original post)

Here are just mock-up images showing what happens when a player switches from a tab to another.
The Smart Filters could be bound to each tab and remember what filter was enabled on tab 1 and what filter was enabled on tab 2, etc..

I think that the Smart Filters should be bound to the active tab. The name of the active tab could be displayed on the Smart Filters "button".

4. Horizontal scrollbar

Here is what the overview can look like with all columns displayed :
http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/116602overviewallcolumns.png

And here is the same with a simple horizontal scrollbar added :

See you.

OMFG, yes!

+1 (oh, right, now you can actually like)

But I hope it won't increase overview lag and more bugs

+1 for the idea and +1 for the leet photoshop skills :P

I do have one question though: when none of your filters are active and you select one, does that override everything else? Seems to me from the 3rd picture that that would be the case. If so, when I uncheck that filter, will the overview revert to the previous settings?

That might be a bit messy to code so the devs should be really careful on how they handle this type of scenario as to not create inconsistencies between the regular overview filters and these new smart filters.

If you're gonna post here thinking your idea is the greatest thing since bacon and that it will save EVE and possibly all humankind with it, you're gonna have a bad time.

+1 for an excellent idea, well presented, well prepared with mockups and elegantly simple. Well done.

Yes, unchecking that filter would revert to the previous settings of the tab.

In my mind, these two new filtering methods would/should not override player-made tab settings.
The Smart Filter or the Quick Filter box would be useful to refine the tabs filtering more precisely.

For example, if the current active tab is "pvp/pve", applying the "Scordite" filter would not display scordite asteroids. Nothing would change to that "pvp/pve" tab.

So what happens if I have a tab that shows only ships and I check the stargate filter? Will stargates be _added_ to my overview, or will they replace it?

I tend to think that checking the Stargate filter should add them to your current tab.

EDIT : maybe there could be options in the Smart Filters " + " dialog to :
- or add a filter results to the current tab
- or replace previous results from the tab

I was thinking maybe of a little checkbox that would make the filters exclusive or additive. All of them, not just per filter option.

So a scenario would look like this:

  • you have your ships tab that only shows combat ships
  • you click the stargate filter while the additive option is unchecked
  • the previous state of the overview is saved and the content is replaced with stargates
  • if you check the additive option, both the previous ships and the stargates will show up on the overview
  • if you uncheck the stargate filter, only ships will show up

The devs should really take their time to code and test this because it would be similar to the new inventory system and we all know how well that ended up...

Thanks for your scenario, NiGhTTraX. That's a good example of behaviour. Exclusive or additive options.

Do devs reply to forums sometimes ? It would be cool to have their opinion on our ideas. Smile

They sometimes do. But they've been pretty busy with DUST so you rarely see them on the forums anymore. I wish they'll come back soon, a lot of good ideas have gone unnoticed... :(

Nice idea, what really needs fixing on the overview is the States in Filters. They use an AND instead of an OR request, meaning that instead of showing a pilot if they meet one or more of the selected states you need to check all the states that apply to that pilots.

This is why it's really difficult to make an overview profile that shows only war targets without neutrals. If they could sort that out it would make life a bit easier. +1 for your filters idea though, could make adjusting the overview on the fly even easier.

Thank you all for your nice comments.

I have just edited the mockup images in my first message because I forgot something... the player could switch from the active tab to another one but the Smart Filters didn't change.. The checkboxes remained the same... even if the player clicked on another tab.

Before (with my ommission) :

Hello.

I have searched similar topics in the forums and if I have found good ideas (More Tabs and Dual Overview), I haven't really found topics related to what I want to suggest here.

I hope you like this idea too and I hope developpers will read this forum (and maybe consider adding these features).

PS : sorry for my bad english and errors if there are some.
See you.
