Can I begin by saying that I love the work you do CCP, particularly the attention you pay to your player community. I am thrilled about DUST514 however:
when I watch the Fanfest streams which contain all the information about DUST514 I've been soooo excited to hear for AGES, I come away feeling a little deflated because of your frankly lacklustre presentation style.

Half the presentations sound totally unrehearsed and the usual fantastic openings with light shows and whatnot are almost always let down by the ad hoc delivery of information which follows. Surely you know in advance the information you want to convey to us so why all this stop-start, um and ah stuff?
I just feel that for a big successful games company you might put a little more thought in to how you present all these exciting new features.

That's it. Can I just finish by saying DUST 514 looks incredible and I plan to buy a PS3 just so I can play it.
Keep up the consistently awesome work!

Yours faithfully,

Tryaz

They gave out all the information they were supposed to.... do I really care how flashy and well presented it is while giving out said information?

No, not really

The EVE stuff was cool. Dust looks like a UT release from 5 years ago, like ET:Quake Wars except no giant mechs or 64 players. No destructible environment in a 2012 game? Poor choice.

They're developers, not professional public speakers. I've seen far, far worse from even bigger companies than CCP so cut them some slack.

Ok, question about Dust I'll put here rather than opening another thread. Bare with me, I'm not a console player.

So I pretty much ignored Dust when I first heard about it because buying a PS3 + buying the game + using console controllers didn't sound like fun to me, besides, I'm poor.

However, I read in another thread that you could use a keyboard and mouse in Dust with the PS3, and that Dust would be both free to play and free to download (can someone confirm both of these?)

If so, I could pick up a used first gen PS3, like the old 40GB models, off Ebay for like $40-50 and plug my keyboard and mouse in it, so it would probably cost less than buying a boxed game brand new. Will one of the older PS3 models work just fine? Is there any reason that I'd want to buy a newer PS3? any advantages to it?

Does this sound about right? Because if I can save money buying an old console, not buying controllers, and playing the game for free then there's a good chance I'll check it out. If there's any reason I have to start buying more/better/newer stuff chances are I won't.

@BeanBagKing

DUST is going to be free to download and free to play. Better than that CCP are also adamant that the micro transactions will never be of the "pay-to-win" kind.

I prefer getting this kind of information from the devs themselves instead of trained speakers.

These guys are devs, not marketing professionals. They did a fine job. Unrehearsed presentations are the best, why? Because they typically are truthful and sincere. If you want rehearsed presentations go talk to your local politicians.

Agreed with everyone here saying cut them slack.

These are the people that you want up in front of you, not trained speakers. It's very challenging to get up in front of a large audience for most of these guys who rarely if ever need to speak before large groups for their work/daily lives.

Some were great natural/learned speakers, others not as much. What I care about is that they spent a bit of time making their slides and they could get through them. That's plenty.

I like it that way.

So many other gaming firms try and hide the fact that they are actually comprised of normal human beings, and think of the community as a problem to be managed instead of people to get to know.

All these shy and nerdy guys and gals are absolutely adorable and I get so much more out of listening to them than some professional cocaine-sniffing ******* that I know doesn't give a **** about me and who I know is only saying what the marketing department has written down for him.

Love them all Big smile

Looks like UT because it uses the unreal engine. The textures and particle effects could be better imo, but the overall style is good. Destructible enviroment does not equal great game and that is something that can be added in an expansion.

Ahahahaha! You caught the geeks proving it does take ability to make public presentations.
Computer programming and business admin degrees DON'T prove you can do just ANYTHING.

So there...now, back to the dog and pony show.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

Haters gonna hate. I think they were awesome. Slick presentations by speaker PR pros are fun for a while but the honesty, knowledge and enthusiasm of the devs are what makes this event a success. Keep up the good work CCP.

I think you totally missed the point.

This is a game where the DEVELOPERS get up on stage and do a song and dance to deliver information we all want. They aren't (cept for that one guy) marketing people or show people. It is certainly watchable and at the VERY LEAST mildly entertaining.

Whatever the **** you are looking for, you won't find it here.... or anywhere that I can think of.

The presentations lacked semi naked women dancing on stage in the background, otherwise they were fine Big smile

Thanks for all your replies. I definitely agree with Postitute and others who have said:

I know it sounds like I'm attacking the dev team, I guess I kinda am but I don't want you to get the wrong idea. I really like hearing directly from CCP employees all the time, I follow everything that gets put on the CCP youtube channel.
I also understand that public speaking is challenging if you're unused to it but COME ON! These guys must be really excited about the game they're developing and absolutely bubbling over to brag about all the great features it has. I guess I just want that to translate into the presentations.

Just to qualify what I've said I would never wish to have CCP presentations given by some flash marketing bod in a three-piece suit and with sun glasses on his head (indoors!!). If it means listening to the ums and ahs I'd always rather hear from the Dev team. I just feel they could invest a little more of themselves in their presentation. They've got a sympathetic audience who are just as excited about these games as they are so relax a little and enjoy it!

No that's exactly what I'm after, some song and dance! These guys have spent months if not years developing these games, I just want to hear that they're as excited about it as I am. Otherwise, like I said, I come away from the presentations and key notes feeling a little deflated.

Except I would argue that they don't show enough of themselves. I know it's hard to be vulnerable on stage but it's not such a risk when you're sitting in front of a room of EVE fanatics so why not just GO FOR IT!

I don't want marketing-polished super slick presentations. I prefer hearing directly from the EVE geeks who craft and mould our game. It's like your mates getting up on stage :)

Seems that OP has never tried having a speech in foreign language in front of a large enthusiastic and possibly drunken crowd.

No amount of rehearsals can prepare you for that.
