The scarcity of women gamers compared to the numbers of menfolk is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Fewer women -> more men who don't have any interaction with women, even online -> creepiness evolves -> OH LOOK A WOMAN fap fap fap -> x 100,000 -> "why the hell am I playing this game filled with mouthbreathing neckbeards?"

Certainly doesn't go for everyone but I know I would feel genuinely gross to the point of not wanting to do anything with the population of the game if I were the object of... well, some degree of objectification, fawning, drooling, making shitposts, etc.
