PvE boat that's better than a BS, but is subpar to a Tengu

This is NOT another "Tengu or X" thread. I know the Tengu is superior, which is why I DON'T want it...

I've been on the proverbial fence about getting a Tengu for high sec missions, but haven't actually pulled the trigger on it as it just seemed...I don't know. I just couldn't ever take the final step of buying one even though I can fly one. Last night I was running 4's with a corpie who has a Tengu, and it seemed like by the time my BS had locked onto them, the Tengu had taken them out or damn near. Wow! Pushed me right off the fence and I decided to buy one. But the more that I think about it now, the more it seems like the Tengu is just super easy mode, which I don't want. I'm not looking to blitz missions or maximize the isk / hour. I like to take my time and slowly eat away at the tank of the NPC's. But I wouldn't mind upgrading to a different ship as well.

Enter the Legion. I'm well aware that the Legion is thought to be subpar to the Tengu for PvE, but that's what I'm looking for. My concern though, is that I haven't seen much discussion about the effectiveness of the Legion for PvE. Everyone just says "Tengu Tengu Tengu". I'm hoping the Legion would be less effective at 4's than the Tengu, but more effective than my Rokh / Abaddon.

Am I right? Is there a different ship you'd suggest instead? Nightmare looks intriguing, but I don't know anything about it except it's lasers, expensive, and incursions. I thought about the Golem, but missiles / torps also seem like easy mode to me (thus the Rokh as opposed to CNR or SNI).

Honestly, if maximum time-efficiency possible isn't your main goal (you care more about having fun), then any of those will do ok. Some HACs are good, some CSes are good, many pirate ships (especially BSes) are good, marauders are good, etc.

So I have a counter question for you, which one sounds more fun to you? Go with that one.

You can run lvl 4s in as small a ship as an AF or as large a ship as a supercap (in lowsec), the only questions are time-efficiency, ISK-efficiency, and how much fun the ship is for you to fly. If you don't care too much about time-efficiency (ISK/h) and ISK-efficiency (ship cost to mission difficulty) isn't too big an issue, then the fun-factor is your main concern.

Duh! (face palm) Fantastic answer; why didn't I think of this! Thank you sir. Dilemma solved. Always been intrigued by the Legion, so Legion it is.

A person just needs a kick in the ass every now and then to see the obvious answer - lol.

Turns out you can PVE fairly well with a range tanked Oracle... if you're willing to put some effort into a PVE fit (instead of PVEing in your PVP fit) you can probably make a decent mission runner out of it.

The only thing I will say about the Legion is that as it uses medium turrets, the lack of range Pulse have truely shows up, even with Scorch, so you can't do what you'd do with BS weaponry.

You'll be better served by beams for missions in a Legion.

Isthar also.

Faction fit Hurricane and Harbinger also work.

Almost all HAC will work except for Zealot mainly due to lack of drone bay.

I love my legion for L4s much much fun with pulses (less so as drones) but if you load it with hams as I assume your skills support I bet it reduces the problems dealing with high EM resists.

Its not the most efficient but still can make a dull L4 day much more interesting.

Armaggedon Navy Issue, with t2 Heavies and t2 pulses it does over 1000 DPS, is fun because its not F1, activate shields, wait.

Also Its not super expensive (less than a Tengu).

Cruiser size and easy but not the isk/hr tengu.

The nightmare will actually run missions faster than the tengu, in sansha/blood raider space. Similarly, the vindi is great vs serpentis and guristas, and the mach can go pretty much anywhere.

Nighthawk? It can do 600 dps with a 225 dps omni (80% resists) tank if you have BC5 trained.

Rattlesnake an Gila are good choices, but pretty boring considering they easily tank everything and you just let the drones do the work

AF are the way to go, when I want a change of pace I bring out my Hawk and go run L3/L4s It requires paying attention, plus there is something about flying around at 1900m/s throwing out hate and discontent. All the while incoming missiles are dealing 5-10 damage.

I've started using Pirate Frigs in L3's...that's pretty fun...

I also found that I'm a bit further from the Legion then I thought I was...bummer...
