I've heard of self fulfilling prophecies.

The opposite of that would have to be what the OP just managed to do P

*lol* same for me.

Hm, let's see if i have one to add ...

Reprocessing V
Refinery Efficiency V
Scrapmetal processing V, if it's worth your time.

There's a bit more to tell, but i'll leave that as an exercise.
Probably not every kind of trader will see a need for these.

For those who wonder: It's really is directly connected to trading for me.

Multiply everything by 1.03

Whilst my personal costs are about 1.15% at present I figure factoring a 3% break-even gives enough wiggle room for competition/minor shifts/alien invasion etc.

So take a product, multiply price by 1.03, if you can sell for more than that figure: buy it.

if only every trader followed this unwritten rule, we would all have more isk, and have spent less time earning it.

Actually, it´s much more simple: "You have to enjoy playing the market."

There!
If you do, everything will eventually come in time, if you don´t, you will fail.

how does this factor in brokers fees and taxes? I think those are going to add another 2.5 percent on top; so would the rule be 1.055 then?

I was running a reprocessing business for a while. I did a lot of mission running and realized how far the buy prices are from the reprocessing value for crap loot noone wants to buy. I just set up large orders for 45 or so different of these crap products and reprocessed, sold minerals. Some of the margins were really nice. Things like mods that I bought at 1k and could reprocess for 18k. You get volume of several hundred on each item and even if all of them aren't killers you can make good money. The problem I ended up having was it only amounted to maybe 60 mill a day on a good day of constant order tracking so I abandoned the idea.
