How is game Choppy with 300 fps? Is Fixed Window broken?

So basically I've gotten a new monitor... and I'm running both accounts on the two screens I have.

I set them both to FIXED WINDOW, and I have the FPS counter running on both. Even Fraps to verify. Both read somewhere around 200-300 FPS. But when I give my ship a little spin... I notice that the game is a bit choppy. Similar to it being like 20 FPS or something in another game.

This Problem doesn't happen when I run in fullscreen, or even windowed...

Why does Fixed Window give so much trouble and "fake lag" when I use it?

200 FPS? I don't think any monitor can support that. So maybe your monitor is getting out of sync hence choppy result.

EDIT: Also I suggest checking your graphical card temperature.

Try changing your graphics settings to interval 1, there is no reason to have 200+ FPS unless you like all the extra heat and wasted power. Plus it might fix vertical tearing if thats your problem.

Yeah, 200 FPS is practically theater-level IMAX quality. Check your video settings and your hardware, because no off-the-shelf monitor or card is dsigned to deal with that kind of activity.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

The problem i isn't the 200 fps. The game runs fine in windowed or fullscreen mode with 200 to 300 fps.

I will try interval 1 though.



Also, imax has never been higher than 60 fps.

My computer is fine handling EvE clients. I tried the different intervals but they seem to do nothing.

The only problem is the Fixed window mode seems to have bad performance when you actually have things happening on it. What is the deal with that? Is there a way to fix that? Fixed window is the best way to play dualbox because you basically get a fullscreen client that you can switch between.

For the moment, I know it sounds odd, but try turning off Anti Aliasing ingame for the time being. See if that does "Something"

They borked some graphic setting in 1.5 (I am guessing part of the AMD/ATI fix :/ ) So they still are working to fully find the fix and you sound to be having a similar issue to mine. 
If I helped you out, Technical Issue, enemy gank, popped your poor fit, hit the "Like" button.

Thanks, I tried that.. but sadly it still didn't do anything. I still get bad performance in fixed windowed mode >.>.


Basically I just get FPS drops in fixed windowed. Goes from a steady 60 to like 30 and 20 when you do anything. Including ship spinning.

Anything running in the background that could cause GPU usage to become an issue (say a web browser with youtube up) or any background apps running?

Nothing really intensive going on in the background... The problem only occurs when the clients in fixed window, so this leads me to believe that it must be something with that. Windowed or fullscreen don't ever drop in FPS. The computer is more than capable of running EVE...


What happens is if you just sit there watching the ship its a constant 59-60 fps. Once you start spinning it goes down to 55-60, then it will dip to 30-40 fps for a couple seconds and then go back up to 55-60. This causes alot of lag on the screen, which just looks horrible. And this ONLY happens in fixed window.

That is a bit odd if it works fine in a normal "window" but is broken in a fixed window..

What is your hardware specs? I am guessing reasonably high end AMD/Nvidia card(s)

Do you have the latest drivers?

And demanding or not, what is running in the background. Turning everything off that can possibly be turned off is always a good start. I don't care what it is, something may be causing the card to pull focus out of the fixed window. :/

4gb ram
ati 4870x2 2gb

nothing amazing, but shouldn't have any problems with eve.

In the background, skype, steam, a music folder, this web browser, and ultramon.

Drivers are latest.

Update: Disabled anti-virus... didn't help.

Is fixed window working fine for others? Or is it just broken overall?

Try this. Disable Catalyst AI in the CCC and get back to me...


CCC = Catalyst Control Center.. you know that right?

Try this. Disable Catalyst AI in the CCC and get back to me...

Already tried catalyst AI.

Has no effect.

Damn thought that would do it.

The fact that your X2 still works is amazing in itself. (over 90% of the people I know with one had their burn out. I went through 3 in warranty before getting a 5870 replacement). Loved that card though.

Hmm... Have you tried going Backward in drivers a bit? Like 12.1's or older? I know it sounds funny, but with the X2 anything is possible. But with AI disabled (= 1 core used) then any studdering from that would be gone.

Lastly, Load up HWInfo (bing/google it) and check the temps of the card as you see it lag and not. If you haven't blown it out or repasted it (after so long it may be that time) it could be downclocking itself to cool itself ingame since eve does push it pretty hard. (especially with vsync/Interval turned off)

I actually was running 11.9 prior to updating my drivers a couple days ago. The reason I updated the drivers was to fix this problem.. heh.

With one monitor and the newest drivers, you'd get some kind of mouse lag in the upper right corner. Crazy, but people said to downgrade drivers and that would fix the problem lol. So I was running 11.9, it fixed the mouse lag problem but not the EvE one.

I've taken good care of the card thou, a couple months ago I removed the heatsink and put some new thermal paste in. It helped with the temperatures. It was replaced once by the manufacturer. Glad they gave it a lifetime warranty.

I'm going to just run a clean sweep of the drivers and attempt different ones.

Let ya know if it works.

Ya it helped a lot in watching temps of everything. Especially that X2 lol. Mine all died wth artifacting cores :(

The last one I was able to boost the voltage to a stupd 1.35v though and while it made it run hotter than the sun, it did prolong its life till I got the replacement lol.

Never seen a GPU hit 120C so easily and still work fine haha. Poor card, but they are on their end of a good haul.
