Like the title says I'm getting ready to run L5 missions for the first time, and I'm not sure what I need to do for fleet composition to run them effectively. I was hoping someone could give me some advice on what all I need to do.

For getting started command ship (tank) + battleships (rr & dps) works greats. I prefer use ships like raven and tempest which have utility high to fit 1 shield rep + a cloak so I can mwd + cloak trick around to ignore baddies.

Use passive resist amps/membranes on the tank since he will be neuted out in the majority of missions. Depending on how many reps you have to keep the tank up and which type of CS you use you might need some high quality resist mods when fighting npcs who hit your resist hole.

Im going to try and make it a group activity for a couple of guys. I hear told that I need a tank, logi and dps any truth to that, should I make a mini incursion fleet?

You can use a logi. A dominix fit with lots of cap regen, local rep to tank a bit of aggro and highslots full of drone link augs and shield remote rep works better imo since you get the ~500dps from drones. If you use a very tanky ship like damnation, tengu or hic for your tank then you can get away with just having a few remote reps on your dps battleships to keep it up instead of bringing a "logi" role ship.

Mini incursion fleet will work great.

A passive tank Tengu can tank almost all L5s comfortably. There's a fit on BC that does the same thing, just replace the CN BCUs with SPR IIs. Then use a dps boat of your choice (Mach, Vargur, Nightmare, etc).

Try it out on Sisi first if you have any doubts about a setups viability.

Active Tengu is a better choice tbh.

With all the neuting prevalent in most L5s? I think not. A logistics boat does zero DPS and can be forced off the field by respawns.

Active tanked tengu works fine. Each neut tower III does -40GJ/s. The fit I use has enough cap regen to permarun gist c-type x-l booster, 10mn ab, hardeners and eccm mod while getting neuted by 4 x neut tower III. Just have to turn down a few mission like The Fortress which have 5+ neut towers (or use different setup to do those ones).

I never had a problem with logistics getting forced off the field. Afterburner + local tank or buffer with rr or just rep drones on your other ships and can easily tank the small bit of aggro it picks up if you turn down stupid missions and carefully follow mission guide.

Active Tengu+Logistics adds up to about 700 dps. Must turn some missions down.

Passive Tengu+Pirate BS adds up to 250 plus 1000 (easily, more is doable depending on the boat), 1250. Can do all missions.

why would you use a logi with an active tengu when you don't need to? I have farmed many millions of LP with active tanked tengu + 2 x faction bs. the only missions I don't do with the tengu tanking are The Fortress and Destroy the Caldari Outpost which as well as neuting are a pain in the ass with all the waves that aggro your other ships...easier to warp in carrier and finish in 5mins.

so

passive tengu + faction bs = 1250
active tengu + faction bs = 1700 ???

If you wanna do it solo theres two awsome combinations you can go for.

First one is carrier, well skilled out you do 1750 dps (thanatos) and tanks like a *****

For gated missions take a passive resisted tengu with a scimi alt, orbit the scimi around and the rats wont even hit the logi dude.

tengu + logi doesn't seem so awesome when it does 600-1200 (depending on what ship you use) less dps than active tengu + dps ship :)
