Ever wonder how many people PLAY EVE, and how it's changed?

Wonder no more.

I'm Ripard Teg, and I write one of the most active blogs out there for EVE Online, Jester's Trek. My blog focuses on the "big picture" elements of the game we all love: the big questions of sov, play styles, CCP's business, and game design. There's more than 600 posts so far, and you'll be surprised how few of them are filler. I've also written something like 20 player guides for EVE, covering everything from Incursions to L4 missions to PvP communications to gate decloaking to gate camping to utility high slots.

I'd like to invite everyone to come check out my work, and a post I wrote today, called Snapcount, provides you with an opportunity to jump in with a topic that's easy to understand: how many people play EVE? How has it changed in the last year?

Here's a teaser that I haven't yet published on my blog. It's a display of a 30-day rolling average of the number of players logged into EVE... since 2006.
EVE 30-day average logged-in players since 2006

How did Incarna affect the number of people who play EVE? It dropped it. By 10.7 percent. How is Crucible affecting the same number? It's up since the release of Crucible by more than 13 percent.

Come give Snapcount a read for the details, and who knows, maybe become a regular reader. Hope to see you there. Big smile

Players as in accounts or players as in different characters, perhaps on the same account? Or how many different people maybe with multiple accounts? This is one of those stats I fear we may never know...

Indeed, I cannot even see that it would be all that easy for CCP to figure out how many different people play Eve including account and character distribution.

Your graphs are useless sir. Any idiot player still active over that period could finger paint your graph while on Valium.

Seems that the height of the incursion update was the first time in EVE history where the population decreased and never recovered. I'm also assuming the player base felt that Quantum rise was the best expansion in EVE history.

Since I'm pretty new, what exactly what caused the rapid decrease and equally rapid recovery after the apocrypha expansion?

Everyone secretly hates wormholes?

Honestly, from the way people talk I figured the "unholy rage" dip would be after Incarna launched.

So Incarna is the only expansion to have a massive drop in number of players? That's.......damning

The biggest increase seems to be Quantum Rise which I believe introduced PLEX and was the great nano-rebalance patch, not many new features or different ways to play. Dominion was another big winner and that was new feature light as well, dominion had rebalanced sov, minmatar and pirate ships which are just improvements of what is already in the game.

So it looks like improving existing game mechanics = massive rewards and releasing new features without any purpose aka Incarna = big loser.

Got that, CCP?

Tippia's graphs do a good job of demonstrating the disaster that was Incarna, followed by the much improved Crucible. If CCP can continue to iterate and improve existing content then we should see continued gains over the rest of the year, maybe getting us to the 60k concurrent numbers.

I wouldn't read too much into these stats. People log on at different times of the day, play for different lengths of time and different days of the week. Some are jusr subbing to update their skill Q while they are too busy dealing with work, friends and family or if they are a bit bored with the game and are tring something else. Best way to find out how healthy eve is, is by sub numbers. We won't know who is using multiple accounts but it's a fairly good indication.

That chart says more than all the spin that the fanbois can and will put on it. It directly contradicts a lot of things some of the super trolls have tried to tell me lately.

Here's a good question:

Y u so loser

"We will create the introduction thread if that is requested by the community. Also, we will have an ISD Seminar about the CCL team in the coming weeks in which you can ask your questions about the CCL team and provide some constructive feedback to us." - Countless pages of locked threads and numerous permabanned accounts later, change is coming.

Tippia's graphs do a good job of demonstrating the disaster that was Incarna, followed by the much improved Crucible.

Unfortunately, Tippia didn't wrap his graphs in a tinfoil hat conspiracy story and mysterious secret sources, so his post was largely overlooked.

Lesson in self-promotion learned, I guess.
