I would just train for Minmatar ships and use a Tornado.

You shouldn't start asking yourself the question "what ship to use" and then put the choice between two. When you decide ships to fly you rather ask yourself, primarily, what role you will fill.

How many are you in fleet? What kind of fleet composition (light, heavy, mixed, what kind of tacklers, tank conformity) - this btw is something you should know before fleet form up too, and you should follow FC's requested fits and nothing else (if you're not going to fly what the fleet need, you might as well fly solo as people will expect you to be able to do something you can't, i.e. at best you're useless, at worst a liability).

The obvious questions too, 'can I afford to lose (many of) these'? And 'do I have the skills to fit/fly this ship properly'? And also 'will I enjoy flying this'?

Without making it too complicated, what every new PvP pilot should try get get as soon as possible, to get a good allround spread for combat: t2 small/medium guns (or standard/rocket/HML if faildari), t2 light/medium drones, all core fitting and navigation skills 4, one frigate 5 to go with interceptor 4, and bc 4. Interceptor, cheap t1 tackle frigate + BC is a very good allround starter setup. After that you build on what you enjoy/want to do.

But if you are asking yourself "NI Omen or Zealot", then you don't know what kind of combat you will do, you don't know fleet composition, and ultimately you are very likely to die alot in poorly set up fleets if you are starting in that end.

AFK-cloaking in a system near you.
