Simple JF question

I finally trained jump drive calibration to V on my alt, but it's still a smidge too far to make it to my midpoint from highsec.

Rather than take any chances, I cyno'd into lowsec like I've always done, then to the midpoint, then to my destination.

But, if I were to gate jump into lowsec, could I then jump directly to the midpoint while still under gate cloak? Or would I have to break cloak and then jump? I'm concerned because I can't scout the gate very well since I can't be logged on on my main and my midpoint cyno alt at the same time.

Thanks.

What jump planner are you using? That should give you the answer you are looking for. I personally like this planner:

http://evemaps.dotlan.net/jump

Edit - upon further reading, I don't know whether you can jump while still under gate cloak. Even if you can't, surely you can jump very quickly if the cyno is already in place, broadcasted, and in range. Hell, it's only a 4 billion ISK hull. What's the worst that can happen?

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

you can do it from the jump in, but not while cloaked.

I'm an idiot, don't mind me.

Ahh yes this was a consideration for me too. If you can get someone else to scout the gate... and they are SURE it is clear, i don't see any problems. You would have to break cloak to jump though so the cyno must be ready to jump to as you go thru the gate.

Fail to see the problem with this, as soon as you break cloak you can jump. No scumbag here, just trying to save a buck.

You would have to break cloak to do it. Its a really, really bad idea. Among the many ways that it could go very wrong (and there are many), imagine what happens if you disconnected right after you broke cloak. Or your client froze up. Or your cyno got popped or disconnected. Don't do it.

When you fly an actually 6.5B isk ship and get yourself new illnesses because you might spend 1M +/-, you're doing it wrong.

Yeah, this is my opinion too, especially since we just killed an Obelisk on that very same gate a few days ago on a lolop in Empire.

Thanks for the info everyone who replied. I don't understand the freighter with the sideways hat though.

I've done this many times, and its far less about saving a million ISK than it is about simplifying my jump infrastructure. Stop being so fail and so pussy.

You don't. You cyno to a station and then warp to the gate.

This is a VERY bad idea.. Your odds of landing in jump range of the gate are low and if you do land in jump range of the gate, your odds of bouncing are very high. Plus you have a beacon acting as a lovely "*** gank me NOW!" flag on overview for everyone to see.

Generally, the tactic is an excellent way to get your friend/amigo/corpmate killed if they've completely pissed you off.

I don't really care if you believe me, but I did. I jumped my Ark into Avenod a HUGE number of times for the region jump. Learn to scout and stop being so pussy about what if the scout disconnects and a bajillion other things.

When you're reguralry jumping bilions worth of cargo several times a week, saving 10-20 minutes of getting cynos moved to another system past possible hostile camps every time is worth risking the negligible chance that your scout disconnects and somoene jumps to the system and he is in point range and he also has a point and your connection drops and you get a lag spike and someone kills your cyno and and and... all precisely in the same 0.5 seconds it takes you to double-click in space and say "jump".

Any reason you cant jump in, select something off your overview, then right click capacitor>jump to, hover your mouse over the destination cyno, use a keyboard shortcut to start aligning to the selected object and then click the cyno and jump?

If it works for you, great. But don't pretend it isn't dangerous. It would help the OP to explain how you do it, rather than insulting the more cautious among us.

There is no reason to be ashamed of mitigating risk. Black Frog has delivered more than five thousand packages and poor connections, graphics card spaz outs, alt tab glitches, router issues, ganked cynos, lagged grid loads, and variations on those have all happened to our pilots, some of them quite often (client freezes are a constant threat).

Can jumping into losec and out to a cyno be done? Sure. Will you get away with it this particular time? Probably. Could any one of those issues strike on any particular jump? Yes. The only question here is how much and how often you want to gamble your JF on something outside of your control.

OP--If you enjoy the adrenaline rush, by all means go for it. Just understand what you're getting into and the nature of the risks involved. If you're jumping to a system where you have sov and/or you have friends to help you, you can certainly reduce the danger of ganked cynos. If you have support in your losec start system, even better. If you're solo, have no support on either end, and you jump a gate through into losec, you'll have a long way back to the gate. You can warp to a celestial, but your warp speed is so low that pretty much any PvP ship could beat you to your destination. If you have a deep safe BM, you can warp to it and back to the gate, but you'll be aligning 180 degress and you'll be vulnerable while you do it (you can improve your odds with nomad implants and max skills). JFs are huge and scanning you down is easy. You can warp to a station if there is one, but then, why not cyno to it in the first place? Other than a love of risk taking, I can't imagine why I would want to jump the losec gate from hisec rather than cynoing in to the station from the same hisec system. The cost of fuel for a one system jump is negligible. Session change timers are down to 15 secs, so you'll spend less than a minute in system even if you dock up to replenish your cap.

We've moved tens of billions worth of cargo every day for the past year. We've solved the problem of having to pilot cyno ships all over the place, so its of little concern to us. Given the number of jumps we make, the risk is not negligible. At high volume, statistics catch up with you. As I mentioned before, we've had pilots experience each and every one of these issues.
