EVE General Discussion

I don't hate Goons. I don't like Goons. I don't know any Goons, so I can't say if they're the sort that'd rescue an old lady's cat from under a car, or shove their grandmother under a bus. (And, I won't say which I prefer.) I respect the Goons for what they've done in EVE, and I think for this they deserve respect. This is not to say they deserve affection, or admiration.

I don't like crabgrass in my yard. I don't hate crabgrass, it's just that it's so efficient in its strategy to succeed if I don't assault the crabgrass, it'll succeed in defeating the grass I DO prefer to call my lawn. As I'm out there in the sun beating back the onslaught of crabgrass, I can't help but respect it. It does what it does well, and it deserves credit for that, although...I'll always kill it on sight.

What the Goons have succeeded in doing, if rumors be true, is what many before them have attempted and few have accomplished. Maybe Mittani is personally responsible for this success through inventive genius, or maybe he's just a good manager that allows the genius around him to flourish, or maybe (just maybe) he and his group have had no real opposition and managed to take what wasn't being tended winding up in the position they now have despite their natures as people.

Whatever the case may be, this is EVE. Hating Goons won't get anyone anywhere in this sandbox. As I've said many times before, concerted effort will. Don't like Goons? Replace them. The ones who pull together an organization with talent and discipline that surpasses the Goons will do just that. Until that is done, all this angst about Goons is so much "sound and fury signifying nothing." As long as the Goons can sit where they are and see nothing but verbiage as a viable threat, they have a right to gloat, and they will.

I'm not calling for an all out effort to supplant Goondom. Their presence is a matter of indifference to me. I am calling for a more clever, and strategic approach to building sand castles in our sandbox. It's the mark of us as players. New Eden is full of just the sort of toys that can elevate many more than just the Goons to enviable positions of power. The question is, has always been and will always remain: Who can pull it off?

Believe it or not, there will come a day when the Goons will wind up the same way as BoB did, the subject of stories about long ago. Someone else will have taken their place. Time has that quality. Ask the mountains that are now beaches. I can imagine EVE still being around when Mittani is seventy years old. I can't imagine Mittani still being around EVE when HE's seventy (if he makes it that far.) I can see him bouncing his grandchildren off the walls...er, on his knee. Then, maybe I'm wrong. If the Goons manage to survive the test of time, THEN they'll be an object of my admiration as well as respect.

So...who can pull it off? That's New Eden for you - full of possibilities.


TL;DR? Take remedial reading courses and hope for the best.
