I'm suer there has been some hue and cry about a properly scalable font (who has time to read all the responses), and while that would be nice, I think what he has forgotten is the reason why the fonts currently only scale to a certain point, and that is so they can all still fit properly within the UI windows.

While it may be slightly out of the scope of this particular blog, I think in some ways these do go hand in hand.

When playing on an exceptionally large screen, like a hi-def television, the current font becomes unreadable; while it does appear that the new font will help with some of the readability, none of us are getting any younger and I can only cram my nose so close to my screen.

Certain other less fun MMORPGs use a UI Scale that allows all elements of the UI to be increased/decreased in size with a slider, which allows text to still fit within the boxes since the entire UI size has been increased.

Are there any future plans to move towards something like that, since it would definitely be a boon for everyone playing?

I know, this is a font blog, but since CCP Punkturis is everyone's favorite UI programmer, maybe fishing for an answer might work

I second this... font originaly was designed when EVE supported 800x600 (!) resolution, now you can't really play with 1024x768 with all this bulky UI, while on resolutions higher than that font gets too small to read (it's more of an issue for me personaly than "playing guessing game" when here's some "5" or "S" in text)...

same issuse with this forum, really... ofc, zooming in does wonders in overcoming first-impression disgust, but that's still not a reason to release half-made stuff and wait 'till players think of "workaround" so GMs/Devs can advise to use it instead of fixing.

As for caps - it's never really been an issue for me, on a contrary: currently it makes some menues easier to read (never thought of that, did you?). Not that it's the best way to make stuff readable, but seing how we're unlikely to get larger fonts anyway...

Nice, but I have some questions:

  1. Will it be possible to change the font size of ESC menu?
  2. Will it be possible to change the font size of the mission descriptions?
  3. Will it be possible to change the font size of the local player list (player names)?
  4. Will it be possible to change the font size on the ship fitting window?
  5. Will it be possible to change the font size in the item description windows?
  6. Will it be possible to change the font size in the PI, S&I, and market screens?
  7. Why not allow us to use our own favorite font? Most of the day I stare at DejaVu Sans Mono and I really like that font (the whole font family actually).

Nope, you'll only be able to change the size of the context menu, as before.

Without the ability to increase font size beyond the pathetic 13 point, this entire endeavour has epic fail all over it.

Waste of time.

I disagree that this is a waste. There is definite progress here. Maybe with the next generation UI they will be able to make it more dynamic and allow for more user customization of font choice and size.

Instead of farting around deciding if capitals were making the client shout at you, they decided to start work on a scalable, dynamic UI, like every other game out there, then a font redesign would've been easier to implement and with better result.

Hence my waste of time assertion. I don't care what it looks like as long as it works and is readable.

They did start on a new UI. I have no idea if it will be dynamic enough to handle more font choices but either way it isn't ready yet. Maybe we can get some dev feedback on it though.

I can read your need fonts FAR FAR better.. I can read them from farther away, with less attention etc.

whether they look better from an artistic sense or not is a matter of debate and certainly people get familar with something and it does take an intial adjust ment..

BUT

They ARE far easier to read for me !

GREAT JOB

This is good news, Thank You Big smile The old font definatly needed work I also had trouble with the number 9 in places I would sometimes mistake it for an 8

Still, it's better to have font where you can tell O from 0 despite its size (well, guess that's about it, really Blink) than wait for it for another 8 years 'till they finally come to making scalable UI or whatever to properly implend new font.

Plus, (if CCP is to be belived) it might actually make loading UI faster. And I do hope it will fix chat issues with text not updating properly (which, I belive, ocasionaly returned over the years because of using older (broken) builds for some patches - might become impossible after font change... unless they screw it up and we'll have to resize all windows again 'till summer Twisted).

Not that it changes fact that most problems with readability come from font size rahter than font itself...

This is a good change indeed.
But, why can't we choose what font to use? Is this a technical limitation or is possible to see this option in a near future? I would love to use the simple and plain Arial or even the Comic Sans (nah, just kidding).

I like the font.

I find the "Menu" to be more legible in the old full caps - either that's my mind or because the nature of the empty space between the letters in a tight space like that is causing a bit of a "Wave" effect. It could be because the font sits a bit high.

In terms of the font itself, I feel like it's a "tall" font. Which isn't necessarily bad, but I liked the slightly blocky nature of the old EVE Font.

It feels more crisp, which I like.

And I do think it feels Sci Fi - it feels a tiny bit "MS Terminal" for some reason, but with a tilt.

It looks a little larger, which I think most people will like - a font designed for a bigger monitor world :)

Congratulations!

It seems a bit too thin to be honest. Make a Medium & Bold versions, using this version only for the extremely small type.

This is probably more of a UI thing, but if I'm going to play on my 60" flat panel I'll need larger fonts, so the ability to resize fonts and the UI to be elastic and reformat based on font size would be nice. Bear

So instead of near-unreadable, now it's differently unreadable.
