I am not sure if this is the right area to ask this, so here it goes.

When ships or probes scan an area how do they detect/see items in said area? By what means do they detect/see? Or is it just a given they see all ?

Just curious of the means that used. Anyone have any ideas players....devs....anyone.

Just out of curiosity, why does it matter?

There are several different types of scanning. Could you be more specific?

Directional scanner - 14.5 au, detects anything that isn't cloaked and isn't a npc ship
Onboard Ship scanner - 64 au and detects only anomalies
Scan probes - anything within the sphere of their adjustable range
Ship and cargo scanner modules - directed modules that tell you about a ship you've targeted
The overview - anything that is "on grid" with you that it is set to show.

Never forget.

Was thinking about proposing a mod on how to give false readings on scans.

That's kinda what I figured. It's a commonly proposed idea. Search through Features and Ideas and you'll get a fairly good sampling of what others have come up with (and critiques on why it may not be good for gameplay):
