Do you hide your EVE addiction

A post rife with the terms of cultural enslavement. I mean, we have a gaming population that brims with arrogance borne of an impression all are independently thinking, and blatantly free-will weilding paragons of individuality....hiding the fact they play EVE...

Hide from whom? The first obvious question - what sort of person has others around them from whom they must hide things? Very strange.

Game "addiction" - something about which I've written extensively (interviewing people in the field of addictive behavior), the professionals in that field reply, "You're kidding, right?"

"Your free, recreational time..." That one got me. It's like someone speaking from inside a zoo cage. So....your time is so preoccupied with the demands of your culture, you're only allowed so much time as "free"? You get to recreate? What is it you're recreating when you do this? Yourself? Even stranger.

The "stupid [im]mature" part speaks for itself. Are you addressing stupid, immature people with your adult questions? Makes one wonder what sort of answer you expect. "Der...yeah. I hide playing EVE with my beat-off magazines."

But...you've been there. You've actually been ashamed to play games past 20 years old? Then...you got over it by becoming insensitive...? (I won't try to parse that pretzel logic.)

Einstein himself said one of the qualities of intelligent people is their understanding of the need to play games.

-8/10 for just plain idiocy on the hoof. (+2 for the effort to cloak the post in a semblence of objective insight.)

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

but for clarification, yes I was silent about EVE as a hobby, because you get weird looks, because people put you in the nerd category, because computergaming is still not accepted as a serious hobby for adults, if anybody of you over 30 never got a weird look when he said he plays computergames you can throw the first stone :)

I don't hide that I play, but when I interview people I ask them if they are gamers and what they do play. Nobody will be the first to admit to playing Eve, but if you mention it they will admit it.

Funny though, if they mention anything it is WoW and half the time they paint a very sad picture of their life in the process.

EVE isn't really a game, exactly.

I think it's a project jointly funded by governments across the world to safely channel the destructive behaviors of people suffering from various anti-social personality disorders.

So yes, I'd rather not tell people I play this "game" for fun. :-)

Seriously though, I never mention this or any of the games I play to my non-gamer friends. They don't ask. I don't tell.

Yeah, but....I think you miss Serene's point, and you further do what she's pointed-out. Who cares if people give you weird looks? They're weird people. What other looks do you expect? OR, do you seek their approval?

I'm six-foot five, I weigh an athletic 225 pounds. Anyone gives ME a weird look...well, let's just say they don't dare. But, again, you seem to think this society and their reaction to you should govern your decisions about life, and that's just a **** poor shame.

Eve seems pretty tame next to GTA, Saints Row, and even HALO/CS/Modern Warfare/BF etc.

oh don't get me wrong, I also don't longer care, but at some point I did. I was just curious how my fellow EVE players handle it, without any deeper meaning or jugdement.

I used to hide it. Then, I realized there were other gamers out there (more than you think) that are hiding their own gaming behaviors . At this point, I don't hide it, don't care, and routinely talk to others about their own gaming behaviors and we have a jolly ole time. If people don't like it they can *bleep* off those self-righteous *bleeps*.

Now the only trick is to find a woman who likes gaming like I do. They aren't very forthcoming about it.

Theres no reason to hide it but people that dont play or have NO clue about it do glaze over if you start talking about it.

So no I dont hide it but I dont go out of my way to scream I PLAY EVE!! everywhere I go in life. I have been seriously considering buying some clothing but Id love to see more variety in some of the color patterns.
