Hello Cutmore,

I used to play with that kind of setup :

[Retriever, New Setup 1]
Mining Laser Upgrade I
Co-Processor II

Survey Scanner II

Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II

Medium Cargohold Optimization I
Medium Cargohold Optimization I
Medium Cargohold Optimization I

Mining Drone II x5

You can fit a MLU Tech II with a +1% CPU implant or Mining Upgrade V and you loose your scanner.

About your question about skill, what do you need to know ? Skills improving yield ?

Once u get ur Retriever up and running......get a Covetor ASAP, then a Hulk!

the differences in yield and bonuses will be well worth the investment!

when i had my Covetor, I hung on to it way to long, thinking there wasnt much of a difference, and man, was I wrong!

So, enjoy your Retriever, but upgrade ASAP! Heck, I happen to have a Covetor collecting dust, so if and when ur ready for one hit me up and I'll sell it to u real cheap :)

Go to 0.5 with some light combat drones and start mining Pyroxeres. Pyrox is ~ twice as valuable as Veldspar.

Twice as valuable being a huge exaggeration. Using yesterday jita buy prices, pyro is 21% more valuable than veld

That may sound a bit weird, but the best piece of equipment for a new miner is a cheap T1 Frig with T1 Fitting. Best a few dozens of them. If you are not interested in mining on a day, grap a frig, fly to lowsec and get some PvP. Do not misunderstand me, this char is Hulk-able and I still enjoy mining every now and then, but if you are completely unable to defend yourself, you will be wardecced sooner than later. Learn to fight back. If your corp has a solid core of PvP able chars (lowest SP way: Ewar Ships) you wont be an easy target.

PS: And of course, it really helps if you think about mining in null or low later in your career

In my honnest opinion, it does not answer to the OP.

And by the way, having PvP skills does not save you from hotdrop/hostile gangs/etc while mining in Nullsec (nor lowsec).
Intel does.

Hi Cutmore.

The setup shown earlier had alot of T2 stuff. T2 is always nice, but not a requirement to go out and mine.

First, train for T1 strip miners. A Retriever with 2 of those and nothing else can mine just fine with Orca support.
Next add the mining laser upgrades. A little extra ore.

Drones are good, even T1 ones, to kill any rats that come your way. Or use mining drones for a little boost to your mining.

The cargo expander rigs help most when you are solo mining. With Orca support you normally just dump the ore in the Orca. Note you need no skills to fly a rigged ship, just skills to install them. If you do not have the rigging skills, get a (trusted) corp mate to rig the ship for you.

Once you get a T1 fit you like, start working on making it T2, and start working your way to a Hulk.
