VoIP for LAN?

This might be in the wrong section but didn't know where to asking, looking for a program that enables you to do voice chat over a LAN without needing the internet. The only one i can find is Vent. but that takes a lot of work it seems to get it to do that with port forwarding stuff.

Apreciate any advice, cant seem to find programs that'll do it offline, and steam doesn't let you do the voice thing when your in offline mode either.

Use a SIP Soft-Phone (i.e. a program that uses SIP for calling). Look for one that allows calling by IP and doesn't need a gateway for registration.

I'm not up to date which ones there are out there to do that, though, sorry - have a look with the search engine of your preference.
The list of clients here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SIP_software should give you a start. (No link-fu due to IGB).

Well, they oughta know what to do with them hogs out there for shure.

yeah sorta, friend of mine doesn't have internet access but has a lan setup with him him and his brother n stuff but their in completely seperate parts of the house, and a voice chat would be much easier rather then having to move around 2 have pc setups, if they can use their mics it would be a lot easier, its a big house lol.

Just run a ventrillo or teamspeak server inside the lan on some dedicated machine like an old laptop. You shouldn't need to port forward anything as you are connecting inside your own firewall so won't have to worry about connecting people from the internet to it.

this

port forwarding only is an issue when you need to translate external requests to your internal address scheme

use a TS server on any box on the network and have everyone connect to it via IP:port

Use mumble its almost zero setup and free.

You cant use teamspeak as you have to be a teamspeak partner and vent cost a licence unless you have less than 10 people.

I used to use ooVoo on virtual LAN (using hamachi at the time) which worked quite well. The free verison is limited to something like 4 slots though.

These days I'd just use TS like others have suggested.
