Some needed changes to the Star Map.

Trying to navigate in the star map view can be a real headache, every time the curser hit something the view changes. If you have the auto select on you can suddenly find you'r selected system half way across the map. The star map has been implemented for quite some time now, and is in need of some tweaking to make it easier to navigate. A few of the changes I would like to see are.

1) Auto Select: Stop with the auto select features, when the cursor comes in contact with another system you only see the small information box, that’s the system name and info currently selected in the options, such as the security level, nothing else will change. Other options should be available within one of the context menus.

2) Large Details Information Box: Currently if you mouse over a system you can get a larger info box, this can be kind of tricky though as most times your either not looking for it, or if you are it disappears and you have to try for it again. Can we add this to the right click sub menu please, maybe a “details” option underneath the info option?
Would make getting to this easier, and also eliminate it popping up when you don’t want to see it.

3) Jump Lines: Jump lines changing every time you mouse over something. Change this to a left click, which will center that system and change the selected lines.
Keeping your current system as a selected area, if you have “just current constellation” set in the map options, then the jump lines for you current system will always be visible. Selecting another area will just high light that area also. This will make keeping track of you location easier.
Keeping the selected and current area more visible when view is set to region or more, this would help to differentiate between the rest of the background and what you are currently trying to view.

A few small tweaks could make the map much better and easier to navigate. Information should only change when I'm looking to change it. CCP has been doing a good job here, starting to address various UI and game related issues, doing things that the players would like to see. I believe that a lot of us would like to see some changes to the map, it’s been a long time with hardly any if anything done to improve upon this aspect of the game, it’s time to make some changes and improve this area of the UI.

One last note, even a little bit here and there will add up in time, some changes do not need to be implemented fully right away, but can be done in parts over a longer period of time. 6 months from now could see a complete over haul of areas such as the map and the mini map windows, but doing it by introducing a few changes every month or so.

I'd use it a lot more than I do if it wasn't such a pain, these changes would make it less of a hassle to look up system info on it. +1

biggest thing I'd like to see on the starmap is to filter off (ie remove from view) stars based on "current region" "nearest 10J" etc...

having to manipulate the whole cluster every time is the biggest pain, reducing that to a subset of stars would be a really good start.

Exactly! To me the 3D starmap is very important for "immersion". But currently it is pretty unwieldy.

As OP said:
- stop auto selections (especially while dragging the mouse, e.g. during rotate gesture -> this must be a bug, not a feature)
- selection must only be changed on click (left-click, maybe also right click)
- allow to make any star the center and keep it centered during rotation (either by left-clicking or via context-menu item)
- allow to hide stars outside the currently selected constellation, region, etc.
- restore position/direction of camera and zoom after leaving and re-entering the starmap
(all in 3D mode)

I guess this is all fairly simple to implement.

I'm quite new to EVE (playing for about 20 days) and I really like the look n feel of the UI in general; but the starmap in 3D mode is the only part of the UI that seems broken and is annoying.

Time to bump the thread again.

come on ccp, it's realy time to make some improvments to the in game maps, they have been like this since launch most likly, and ever since I have been here, which is around 3+ years, so how about giving this area of the game some needed atention.
Maybe after some nice overhauling of the main map we could start dealing with the mini map, was a nice thread on some proposed changes for that a while back that got some good suport also.
