Give role bonuses to the different T1 industrial ships similar to exhumers so that every ship has it's own specialisation instead of just being a stepping stone for the biggest one.

Would make them more interesting and situational, I have to admit that the only reason to use a smaller industrial is for speed and agilty. Perhaps the smaller ones give penalties to ship scanners or the larger industrials get a small speed boost using a cloak. Just ideas off the top of my head to get the ball rolling.

I think OP meant the barges. Really though, there's no need for this, since people jump from retriever to hulk ...

However, giving the Procurer (and ONLY the Procurer) a gas harvester (prereq gas harvesting 3-5?) might make it sort of useful again...

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

No I was thinking of the industrials, but mining barges is also a good example where the lower tiers are less useful.

Well, one thing to remember is that Exhumers are T2, T1 Indys are not. T2 ships, all of them, are specialized towards individual roles. T1 ships are not specialized much at all.

the tech 1 industrials are fine as is (a bit thin, but still OK)
