The real question here is why would you mine? Even further, why would you mine in a retriever? If you really must try it out just for fun, get it over with quickly. Then go run missions and find that you have come out way ahead in a fraction of the time.

Well what I mine, Pyroxeres, contains everything you need to make missiles. So taking the butterfly effect into account at some point in time my mining makes someones ship go pop, and all I did was mine. Also in Hulk mining that stuff will make you as much as a Lvl 4 mission runner. I like running missions too, but I mine most of the time. This week alone I have mined 60 mil worth of it... in a Retriever. Mining can and is very lucritive if your willing too step out of your comfort zone. My Retriever literally pays for it self every 25-30 minutes. With the way I mine my Hulk when I can fly it will pay for its self in a week, after that it's pure profit.

I try to be nice and mind my business just shooting lasers at rocks. There is just way too many asshats in New Eden for that to happen.

60 mil a week is not 'very lucrative'. I occasionally mine too, when I am bored or just want to watch a movie or youtube without paying much attention to the game, but it certainly doesn't bring in much money.

Hi Gumby.......

dont let those "why do mine" knuckleheads get u down, they are just jealous!
anywayz, that's a whole diff subject..............

Here's a tip, and take it or leave it.

I mine with GSC's (Giant Secure Containers) set up on a belt. I put 10 on each belt I mine. Tho a GSC can only hold 3900k, it makes it much more efficient, for me at least, to fill up each GSC as I move up the belt. That way I can mine the belt for the longest time possible w/out having to go back to the base each time my hold in my Hulk fills up. I then get my Itty V and pick up all the ore in the 10 GSCs and bring back, refine/sell.

Not every one likes that way, but I find it works great for me :) I easily make over 15 mil on 3 belts with each session.

Get a Covetor asap if u can, then a Hulk....they are so much more efficient mining wise.

NOTE: GSCs can only be set up in .7 or lower space. Once anchored they cant be flipped.....

Hope that helps....and MINING RULES!

Thanks

I am going to try that... I have been mining in .9 because there were fewer can flippers out there, but the better minerals are in the lower space. Thanks for the suggestion. I have an Iteron IV with 2 extenders and a couple of rigs... with my retreiver it allows me to leave the retreiver on site and run the ore with the Iteron, but it is not super efficient. I will be in a Hulk next week.

Here is another question... if I use secure containers and a hulk to mine, should I have my other account in a ship with a couple of mining lasers on top to help mine out a field faster. I am Gallente and have good drone skills, and T2 drones to help protect my ships from rats. It would be BC/BS class with 5 drones available for protection. I could then use the Iteron to empy containers when I am finished. Just wondering if this would be a good way to mine?

Hey Gumby....

Sure, if u have an alt use him.. :)

But, I still do all my stuff myself with one character. If you can manage it, go for it.

From what I gather, you mine an entire belt? I pretty much stick to rich plagioclase and mine 40+ GSC's worth on 4 belts.
Then with the Itty V, grab the ore from 10 GSCs 4 times, then fill up the Orca and sell the ore for a very nice profit. Usually make about 24 mil per Orca load.....

Once you get the hulk you can also just run L4 mining missions. about (2.5m ISK and 6k LP) x2 every hour. I guess whether or not that's worthwhile depends on your LP conversion rate, but every 8 hours or so you get a L4 storyline mission for a chance at a decent implant.

Just a side note, if you feel the need to jetcan (especially when the belts are far from the station or there are no stations in the system) get a safe spot near the belt and dump your cans there. Short jumps are better (now that we can align to bookmarks) than time wasting long jumps and it pisses off all but the dedicated can flippers.

Short jet can is optimal for this.

I suggest you either move to 0.5 or 0.9.

0.5 if you want to keep combat drones and mine better ore.

0.9 if you want to use mining drones and increase your yield while avoiding rats.

If you do want to use the GSC method aim for a 0.7.

Good luck.

@ Gumbly
Train your Alt to Orca asap. With it, you can buff you mining vessel alot and you have so much cargo.

If I go mining, Im sitting in a Rokh. That ship it the best "mining vessel" after the Hulk, I guess. 1 of my alts is sitting in the Orca with mining links. 3 other alts are also sitting in a Rokh and filling the Orca in a couple of minutes. Also a well fitted Orca can align into warp really fast, almost like a BS.

I also have a small question: If you aggress in a frig and CONCORD respond, how long do their ships stay there? I never tried it out yet, but it might hold back at least some gankers since CONCORD would be able to respond immediately if their ships stay in the belt until DT and it is impossible to kill a Rokh/Hulk with one volley and 1 ship(s) since CONCORD even rapes a triage carrier in a few seconds (at least on Sisi).

There are many ways to have fun in eve.... and lets not forget it is a game....

I enjoy the mining and industry aspects of the game more than the mission running parts. I still run missions as well as having 4 R&D agents that I am slowly leveling up to get to level 4 agents... As I said elsewhere in the forums, I mine to have fun, to make some isk to pay for the toys I run missions with and to make money for my research and invention stuff that i do. That is the great thing about eve, we can all find a niche for ourselves. Who knows maybe one day you will be PVPing / Mission running in a ship I built...Lol

lol @ impossible to kill a hulk in one volley

Those who cannot keep up will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Which ship can deal about 25.000 damage per volley? As far as I know only caps can do that and even more.
