Yes you can play as a lone wolf. I have done that for around 5 years or so and done quite well for myself, amassing quite a fortune and quite a collection of ships. But IMO you need a team (corp/alliance) to take advantage of everything EVE has to offer. If only for safety. Living alone in a wormhole will get you evicted quickly. Living alone in null will get you ganked quickly. Without these two facets of the game you will not be fully enjoying it. Imagine my surprise in null when I found out that my manufacturing was bottle-necked because of a shortage of low end minerals like tritanium and pyerite! I've got megacyte and zydrine coming out of my ears. Completely the opposite situation that I faced in high sec.

As for your second point - PVP will find you no matter where you are. The only way to avoid it is to never undock, and even then expect to be scammed.
