Apologies if this has been suggested before

Having recently started mining with a few alts in barges and an Orca to lazy dump ore into / provide boosts I noticed how tedious it can be to get all barges in range of the Orca / Rorq to "use" them whilst being aligned correctly at the same time.

Now the idea that came to mind was some form of magnetic / attraction system that the Orcas and Rorqs (Leaders) can use to keep barges near them, close enough to be able to access the leader, whilst keep them aligned in the same direction as the leader. Hell even move in formation at the same speed as the leader would be nice too.

If people have an issue with a whole formation being able to be moved at once then the simple solution could be the leader has to be stationary to activate the system which then brings in the barges and aligns them.

On each of your Orcas, right-click the rorq and "keep at range". Instant formations :)

Pretty sure there's also a "regroup" fleet command that will do this too, if you've got your own fleet.

How exactly do you "use" an Orca during mining?
Aside from boosting and collecting the ore which is really easy if you just jettison it then collect it with a tractor beam. You can keep everything aligned and spread out to mine 20-50km away from your Orca.

If you want an intelligent argument, please do, I'm up for it!

But if you want a trolling contest, I will win it by simply not participating.

Little icons next to ship and fleet hangars, that allow fleet/corp members to access them when close.

This also means that you can rapidly stow vulnerable barges in heavily tanked Orcas, instantly. Two full-yield Hulks that are vulnerable to ganking, can disappear in an instant when the Catalysts show up on grid, leaving behind a tanked Orca that can't be ganked nearly as easily (500k EHP is very doable), and two pods that drop no loot.

That, and you don't worry about jetcan-creation timers, not that that's a big deal anyway.

I actually had an idea for a Fleet Commander (FC) Organizational Overlay... while it would not actually DO anything on its own, you could be the FC and create a visual overlay (we do have implants in our heads, why can't a mapping overlay be shown?) that would show up near the FC in whatever configuration the FC designated it to be in, that would show a fleet WHERE the FC wanted them to fly. All pilots could feel free to fly whereever they chose, but it would make it easier to organize the SHAPE of a fleet if the FC could show everyone VISUALLY where he/she wanted them to fly. Would be nothing more than a visual modification to the game that would show up in map and on grid to allow FC's to be more clear as to what they were trying to convey to their fleet members, as to the shape of the formation they were thinking. Would only be visible to those invited into the overlay itself... not just the fleet channel or wing channel... but individuals would need to invited and accepted into the Overlay itself.
