Hello

I'm actually writing a little thing on were the ships name comes from and I have a problem with the vexor. Usually gallente ships uses greek and babylonian mythology for its name, but the vexor is an exception, and I wasn't able to find the origin of its name. The only two things that comes in my mind are either a form of vexo (latin word for "to torment"/"to mistreat"), or vexor which is an continuous integration tool for python (a tool to merge work from different developers).

So... Does anyone have an idea of the solution ? With a dev source maybe ?

I can see how that would be vexing. Big smile
In all fairness the naming conventions are not universal across the 4 races. The vexor is an obvious attempt to say this ship torments it's opponents. That's my take on it at least.

You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friends nose. Unless you podded them...and collected their corpse.

No source... but the latin route is "to annoy" or "to harass".

Here's an old thread about it.

** edit **

I tend to agree that some of the Gallente ships are slight bastardization of regular words.

So Vexor is a ship that vexes or harasses opponents.
A Dominix is a ship that dominates opponents.

Due to the degeneracy of your average Gallentean, its more likely to be thus:

Vexor = Sexor
Dominix = Dominatrix

It comes from the ancient etruscan vexarius, which was a device that allowed braided hair to dry faster.

Drones swarming all over you can get really vexing really fast.

A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.

Megathron - big + some sort of ancient european word for throne. i'd translate to "highest ruler"
Brutix - heavy (old meaning), brutal (current), both fit.
Iteron - there used to be iteron 1 to 5. Hull version iterates.

Breacher - breaches. You will need duct tape.
Thrasher - describes both what's gonna happen to the enemy and how your ship looks like before the engagement even starts.
Rupture - duct tape ain't gonna help here.

Wreathe - some sort of angry mystic creature
Hoarder - collector
Prowler - prevails.. Survivor?

Bestower - some sort of an enchanter or gift giver
Avatar - living image

Latin: vexor; first-person singular present passive indicative of vexo.
English: to vex

Iteron ???

Iteron: created by a wrong translation, from the greek word "pteron" in Dantes Divine Comedy, by Giovanni Boccaccio
in his book: Expositions on Dante's Comedy, 1373.

OP, I had similar questions a while back and did some searching. I was trying to figure out what Earth plants and creatures exist in New Eden, for super-nerd fanfic purposes. Here's a list of ship and items names and where they come from. Your list matches mine, pretty much.
Some notes:
-I see now that Velator is not on the list. At the time I think I found something like Latin, 'traveling merchant.'
-Right, Tristan is Sir Tristan from the King Arthur stories and Tristan und Isolde.
-Thrasher is actually a bird, in the bug-hunting shrike family.

If you post the same question over in EVE Fiction, you might get some more thorough responses from us resident otaku types.

Tristan is derived from the Celtic word drest or drust. Wagners "Tristan and Isolde" was inspired by the book "Tristan and Iseult"
written by Gottfried von Straßburg circa 1210, which was inspired by the novel "Tristan" written by Thomas d'Angleterre around 1180.
