I was going to propose into little things thread that stargate should be untargettable. But then I thought perhaps I simply do not understand the reasons behind and there might be a case where you want to do it?

For nefarious people to be nefarious and do nefarious things for nefarious reasons.

I actually have no idea why you can, it's probably easier to let people target anything rather than decide what we can and cannot light up.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

Well, stupid gankers with their safety on red, might die a little sooner, oopsie, and the hauler pilot they actually wanted to shoot at, can laugh hysterically at them, as he watches them being dismantled by concord, so it's not all bad.

If you can't tackle the gate, it'll get away.

Having witnessed a fleet member shoot the gate by accident then die provided enough lols to keep this in eve

So that people can make stupid mistakes while consuming their choice of recreational substance.

Also winter is player owned stargates are coming.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Did that a few times over the years.

First time was in null, lucky enough.
Second time was when I was, um, interdicting traffic in low sec. Was in a BS and already was flashy, so didn't matter much.
I think the times after that were in null again, but its been a few years and don't remember the specifics.

Because if they weren't targetable having newbies in fleets shoot the Stargate and get CONCORDed wouldn't be an Eve Uni meme? Lol

Seriously though, I think it's just that it would be work to make them not targetable and there's no particular reason.

I imagine it's because interact-able objects that you can orbit/warp to/etc are all targetable as part of the interaction code. I can't think of any exceptions off the top of my head, there could be I suppose.

oh yes you are right but some objects are invulnerable such as station - why gates aren't?
