Every time I think I have finally figured out how Auto-Targeting Missiles work they do something different.

I I thought I had finally cracked it because they shoot drones must be they attack the nearest aggressive thing with the exception of Damps for some reason but then.

00:00:52 Combat 231 from Jolly Raccoon[BAKE.](Imperial Navy Slicer) - Small Focused Modulated Energy Beam I - Smashes
00:00:55 Notify TE-2100 Ample Light Missile Launcher has no suitable targets within range.

Ok the Slicer is 20km away the kitsune is 60km what's the problem it should shoot the slicer ?

42.2km is the range of auto-targeting missiles on kitsune without rigs or mid slots that improve that.
other than that.... i dunno...

was he using some EW on you? missile disruptor or something like that?

As I understood them (as of a few years ago,) they auto-targeting missiles attacked the nearest target that has taken aggressive action against you (Red box on the overview).

So unless the close ship has actually shot or EWARed you, the missiles won't consider him a threat.

A word to the wise: Auto targeting missiles do significantly less damage than even the basic tech 1 version. Unless you're facing so much ECM you actually can't target anything, I don't recommend using them.

Just ECM from the kitsune. As shown in the log the closer ship had activated an aggressive module but the launchers would not fire.

Do you think they know ? lol

I think the basics of it are that they attack the nearest aggressive entity like you said , as do drones but there are some exceptions so I think it is perhaps working as intended.

It would be really nice to know what the weapons you are using do though.

could it be a safety settings issue? I've never tried auto-targeting missiles in pvp.

I'd also like to know the mechanics better. I've got some theory fits but am still training the missile skills.

The safety was off

To be fair I use AT missiles more than anyone else I know in PVP. Most people don't like them because of their unreliability and inferior performance. There are a few niche uses in PVP and a few PVE ones.

If you un-group your RLML they are quite effective at clearing swarms of NPC frigates by staggering the activation they will select a new target rather than over kill.

Perhaps their is some offside rule where if there is another aggressor between you and the target ect.. I recall that if you burn to zero on the jamming ship they will shoot it I think.

yea but if the slicer is near and the kitsune is far and both are attacking I would think it would try to hit the slicer. if you have the kitsune locked and are trying to activate the mod on the far target maybe that is an issue? although I'm pretty sure in pve you can have whatever locked and they will still go for the closest target.

Auto targeting missiles are pain to use. worst part is when they decide to target random structures :X
