In this game there is some kind of exploration etiquette?
Examples...

  • If I am in a system claimed by someone shoud I declare my intentions in order to avoid retaliations?
  • If there is a data / relic / something_else site that I'm unable to loot shoud I say that this site exists, in order to ease the work of my fellow explorers - if any?
  • If I jump in and someone is looting the site should I stay or should I go?

Thanks!

No. It's dog-eat-dog. Unless you're in an organization that enforces an etiquette like Signal Cartel's, basically take all their sites and kill your competition if possible.

I would suggest that you do not cherry pick the sites unless you are being hunted, if you do this routinely some people will go into relentless hunting mode against you..

When the going gets tough the Gankers get their CSM rep to change mechanics in their favour.

In EVE you have to ask yourself...would they do the things you mentioned for you?

If someone is in a site when you get there. You have 2 options: kill them or run.

I don't. Unless it's super obvious like you're in nullsec and there's an available local chat that shows everyone who's in system. Then I just skip by if I'm only looking to explore and go to the next empty nullsec system. Otherwise in wormholes I do my best to determine if I'm alone or not. See how many are docked in their Citadels, directional scanner, etc.

I always hack the cans so they at least open or explode. The site will despawn after all the cans have been hacked or failed somewhere else. The rumor is there's a set number of each site in the game at a time. Using a cargo scanner and cherry picking is really bad manners and they deserve to be beheaded.

This is where I measure up what I'm flying, what he's flying, how many cans are left, could I get a good jump on him before he finishes the site for me? It's entirely up to you. Explorer violence is pretty exciting!

I would say follow this advise if you go to the same region a lot. If you're like me and got different regions at different times cherry picking makes you more isk/hour because you'll go through the sites faster

One bit of explorer etiquette that is nice when people follow is to not leave sites half done. If you've got a cargo scanner and are cherry picking cans just do a couple failed hacks on the empty/worthless ones so they explode. That way the site will respawn faster elsewhere and you won't waste the next explorer to scan the system's time

Tops I did is to tell random people in null that the remaining sites in system are holes and combat ones after I saw their core probes.

But that was during my Alpha days, when my explorer ships didn't have teeth. Theye days I'd just a set a trap.

There's no way to claim systems for exploration sites. Any site is free game for anyone.

I don't do much competitive exploring, but surely cherry picking is a good way to waste your competitions time on sites that you know are worthless. Pvp. I suppose of course if you aren't looking for pvp then you might want to avoid doing this.

This post brought to you by CCP's alpha forum alt initiative. Playing the eve forums has never come cheaper.

No. No they wouldn't. It's dog eat dog. Get yours before they take it from you.

Oh yes, certainly tell everyone you are going to be in sites...or you could just self-destruct and save a little time.

@OP;

During my time with Signal Cartel up to recently, this disccusion came up quite abit, and it was discussed up to and including cherry picking sites. The general rule of thumb was to clear the sites even if it had any worthless junk like Carbon for one.

Another point was once you scanned down a site and if somebody else was already in it, just move on, of course if the sig is still active on your probe window you could go back to check and see if it was cherry picked leaving the junk behind.

In my experience yes it may take a little time to clear the site if need be, but this insures that a new site will spawn somewhere else in the constellation/region.

As a side note, since Alpha clones were introduced last fall, the uptick in cherry picking has gone up, but I do not have staticstics to show if it is or not. QuestionQuestionQuestion

In a game where scamming, can flipping, profanity in local chat, market manipulation,PvP almost anywhere and sundry other "vices" are considered fair or is tolerated, I find it amusing that somehow "cherry picking" is frowned upon and considered unsportsman by some. I merely consider it another form of PvP, although it does appear that it may increase profanity in local chat .

To buck the popular trend, I began to Rage Start instead of Rage Quit.

...and every time I get another piece of Carbon, I know exactly what CCP is getting this Christmas.
