Bringing Dust into EVE.

So this idea sparked in my head a couple of months back when one of my corp mates asked what became of Dust 514 and the attempted pc version Project legion.
It has been floating in my head for a while now and I think now is the time to put pen to paper and see what you guys think of my idea.

With the advent of the FTP mode in EVE players now have a way of joining the EVE universe without paying a cent this was of course the same with Dust (As far as I know I never got to play) thus I propose the idea to merge the two.

So yes EVE and Dust would be the same game same launcher and it would still just be called EVE Online but now when creating a new character you are given an option to start in space or on the ground your choice would dictate what tutorial you start.
And should you later choose to play the other side you simply start that tutorial and off you go like normal.

While they should remain separated there should be some interconnectivity between space and ground though I do not believe that crossing from space to ground or visa versa for anything should be forced as there will be players simply not interested in the aspect they do not play.
In saying that there should be incentives for doing so. eg going to cost x isk to get to next battle area on the ground but you could fly yourself there and save that money.

This would also make orbital bombardments mush easier due to simpler communication between space and ground forces.

Possible problems and issues.
Engine - EVE Online's engine was obviously not built for an fps so I don't know if you would do a load screen and change or if components could be added to make EVE's engine capable of running Dust.
Economics - Obviously the prices for stuff stuff would be way out of whack because if a battleship costs 100m a tank should really cost like 10k but obviously it can't be like that.

I believe this would add players to EVE in the long run as player coming in only for the shooter side may try the space side and like it.
It would also add a fun alternative to station spinning for hours at a time on some days.

Anyway let me know what you guys think.

Wasn't the game discontinued almost a year ago?

Anyway, it wouldn't work. Different game engine, different options all over the place that would cripple the UI, different cloning technology (capsuleers needs capsules, infantry use their combat suits). We Eve players are space gods, dust infantry are planetary ants who can't even jump very high.

The above message presents my opinions on the topic at hand. If there is a conflict between my views and reality, consider reality to be correct until proven otherwise.

The engine does present a problem yes. Cloning tech is actually identical though.

I thought that the basic idea behind Dust was solid, having an interconnected universe where what happened on planetary surfaces was connected to the greater Eve universe. But Dust never took off, whether that was the implementation, payment model or it just wasn't the right product at the right time or whatever reason I couldn't say.

So while I still like the idea I don't see anything in your proposal that would make a "new Dust" different from the old failed one.

The reason dust failed the first time was that 1 it was at the end of the PS3 life cycle and 2 it was on the PS3 isolated from the pc base that played EVE.
Atleast that is what most people I have talked to think.

Dust wasn't enough of a stand alone game. Wasn't much for non-eve players to be interested in and not a whole lot to do than fight for territory (which was dominated by one group). Console games have a very limited life.

If dust was on pc and it was easy to switch between capsuleer and dust bunny it would have been a very different story. If it was it's own thing as well as an accessory to eve it probably would have retained all players, rather than just eve players, better.

The first stuff for dust came out in 2009. Game didn't launch until 2012 I think iirc.
The problem was CCP Shanghai. They had no experience with ps3. It was around the time foreign consoles were ever let into China for the first time in the free trade zone in Shanghai. Western devs had years of the experience by then so dust was essentially equivlant to a first generation ps3 game from 2006 when no one knew what they were doing.
Ps3 was at its height, but they had too many issues with the game to ever get it past the alpha beta stage. They had to change project leads several times and they never got carbon to work on ps3 so they had to use unreal engine. It may have been officially released but it was still an alpha with many items and systems missing or broken and exploitable.
There was a huge base right when it came out that dropped off a cliff when they realized the game wasnt finished and turn over on new players that got eaten up by veterans which made the game big fun if you were any good at it. But it never took off. They just didn't put enough into it to get it working in time then they pulled the fan fest fiasc and after that it was essentially a skeleton crew working on the game untill it was closed.

IMO they should have canceled that darkness mmo or whatever years ago and had that studio working on it where you would have an easier time finding people who knew how to make games for it and it'd have had a real chance IMO.
Plus there was no incentive or meaningful connection to Eve. There was almost no people doing the bombardments.

No it's not, Dust & Capsule clone tech is incompatible. learn your lore.

Dust also did reach live stage, it was not stuck in Beta, and according to financials & such it actually made them money in the time it was running. The main problem was actually their PR side and the FF fiasco.

However Dust 2.0 is still in development as far as I know under the name Nova now. It may or may not be the final name still of course & it may end up not seeing the light of day

No , the problem was it was a pisspoor fps by the PS3's standards.
It was mushy, clunky and unpleasant to move around in, the gunplay was just as bad and everyone was bullet spungy.
No amount of pr would have helped that game, I really really wanted it to be good but it just wasn't.

The only two things it had going for it were the art , which was awesome ,
and the introduction to the eve universe, which I'm thankful for.
