Optimizing HD game footage recordings

Hi all sorry if this topic has been brought up a thousand times. I did try googling for answers but found myself reading info that was at least a few years old.

I'm new to editing so for the time being ive been using a combination of windows 10 media recorder, movie maker and youtube's terrible video editing software to produce my videos. the results ive been getting arent so great. my sharp gameplay footage usually ends up slightly blurry once it finally makes it to youtube. The only times ive been able to get it crystal clear is by uploading the raw video file to youtube and using the painfully slow tools on youtube to process and edit the video.

so what im looking for is an optimized process for first of all capturing the highest quality video possible, and then for uploading crystal clear videos to youtube. I use movie maker to cut the videos and add audio...then i save them as mpeg-4. I have tried messing with custom settings for the save, with no luck.

I'm open to buy some software...I really cant imagine paying more than $50 or so for the simple stuff im trying to do. Can someone with a bit more experience break this one down for me? What?

Keep in mind youtube doesn't show full quality until a bit after the video has processed. It eventually should display in the format you uploaded.

If not, some settings to be tweaked somewhere. Inspect files each step to see size and any quality information available thru windows. (itll give the resolution usually)

Also, "Fraps" is one of the best recording softwares out there. Full HD picture, just as you see it. Gonna need a big harddrive tho

I know about the delay on youtube....unfortunately its not that simple, as I was hoping

a twenty minute fight I recorded yesterday showed up as 3.9 gigs raw with windows 10 media recorder. After the first save with movie maker its down to 1.5, i assume this is where i lost the quality. I thought maybe it was because I took out the audio and sped up the time lapse to 2.5x. but it must be something else. I try to use the m-peg-4 save option for "high definition displays".. a template which is included as a default in movie maker... i think this is where things are going wrong

Use this to record: https://obsproject.com/
Use this to edit: https://hitfilm.com/express

Make sure you record, edit and export at the same resolution.

You might also try posting in the My EVE sub-forum here. A lot of people who do the work you're interested in seem to appear there. Mind you, I'm not sure how active it is!

Just a thought. Good Luck!

A further thought: Generally, the difference between paid and free media manipulation s/ware is not so much the features - I've found some incredibly good free apps - it's the way that paid software makes lighter work of your tasks and gives you a bit of flexibility and, of course, more options.

For example, when I'm editing basic audio material with no special demands, I use Audacity; famous, and deservedly so. But as my demands grow, I need something which helps me to save time; which gets the job done completely and without my having to fiddle around, so I go for the subscription model stuff. It keeps the price down a bit, and gives me access to stuff I couldn't afford to buy outright.

As I said, I wish you all the luck in the world, and I look forward to seeing your finished work; please drop me an EVEMail when it's done!

If you're uploading in a format that needs to be compressed by youtube, you're leaving it up to their server. See if you can find a video encoding option for quicktime, aka mov, h264

I tried OBS, I think my settings are wrong because I get very low quality recordings. sticking with the built in windows10 recorder for now for the much higher quality video. Im using lightworks pro and I can produce a high quality local files, but the moment I upload it to youtube it loses quality. I know its possible to get it on youtube without losing quality, since Ive seen it done. Im just wondering how those people are doing it. I cant even use hitfilm 4 for some reason, it crashes when ever I try to start a new project or load my previous save. I was able to use it for about an hour, but the moment I saved the project and tried to reload it, hasnt worked since.
