A College Student studying EVE Players

Okay so, this might sound weird, but I'm a college student (freshman) in the middle of a research paper on video game players. After gathering a lot of my secondary research pieces to use, I realized that a whole lot of them were pertaining to EVE Online and I figured that I'd use it a lot in my paper. However, I would prefer to get some actual input from the players. I don't know exactly if this will get attention, but if it did, it'd greatly help my project.

At most, you'd just answer a few basic questions pertaining to the game and just saying why you enjoy it as much as you do. If you'd like, I could also keep your names anonymous for the project. Either way, it'd really help my research.

The aforementioned questions are:

  1. Are you in a player corporation? Do you prefer it or not and why?
  2. What role do you typically fill and why?
  3. Why do you play EVE at all?

Again, you're not obligated to help, and I totally swear this is for a research project that will not be published in any way. It will be presented in one classroom then never be spoken of again.

Thanks if you do chip in, though!

1) Yes, a one-man corporation. I prefer it because I dodge taxes and I'm my own boss
2) MTU Hunter and general highsec gadabout, because I like padding my killboard, chatting with people and just generally being a nuisance
3) Only MMO where I can do what I want without being forced into specific roles

1)I originally joined my corporation because I knew it was a whole side to the game that i was missing out on, and I knew for a fact MMOs are far more enjoyable to me in a group rather than solo.

I stay in my corp for mostly the same reason, and that I find the group content is entertaining and can net me some good isk.

2) I can only fly up to cruisers at this stage, as i was alpha for a couple of months and trained to fly bombers in my only omega month so far. My role in the corp is taking a frigate to any fleet fight and performing any utility task that happens to come up, from scouting ahead, to tackling a fast target, to just offlining a bunch of turrets left behind after attacking a tower.

3) The answer to this is probably the answer most people here will have, and that is that eve is very loose compared to other mmos, in that there is a lot a freedom to interact with other players, whether it be on a grand scale or a small scale, for better or for worse. Things like scamming, ganking, messing with 1v1 duels and so on is fully allowed and even endorsed by CCP in some cases, and you can do and fly whatever you want.

!

I have an alliance and a corp. It's perpetually wardeced so I'm not there now. I would prefer to be in it because the tax is zero but I have alts to sell stuff. Mostly it's a hassle to be in one, but you have to have a corp.

Empire Ganker. When I realized 'you don't play the game, you play the players, ' I realized ganking in HighSec was the easiest and most profitable business. I farm players.

It's challenging. If somebody else can do it better they do and take your place. It keeps you on your toes.

1. Full Indy self incorporated, prefer to do whatever I like at a given time. Have a good deal of old friends in life and deal with peeps all day, so no need for another "corp" in my life atm, (who knows though, if you meet someone you really really click with, it could change). Don't mind them buzzing about though and adding a bit of that unpredictable danger.

2. Role changes with ships I fly, but eve's pvp implementation does nothing for me so H sec pve, exploration and market gaming for the most part.

3. Like the universe and graphics, it's relaxing, even when little Johnny jumps into your mission and you blow the wrecks up in front of him, good times. Big smile

1. Currently in a one-player corp (and several channels). [1420.] was a good corp but I realised I wasn't really suited to non-aggression.

2. In a fleet, typically F1 monkey. (Got to find time for more NPSI hijinx)

3. a) Because it's a sandbox without a need to follow a storyline to progress.
b) Because I'm not "The Chosen One"
c) Because it fits around my work and study
d) Because it's less "twitchy" and more "thinky" than a lot of games.

Yes because only wimps hide in 1 mans or npc corps, real men don't mind war, they welcome it.

I'm a hero who dedicates themself to saving people,

It's one of the only games not in the horror genre to be able to get my adrenaline going, them pvp shakes

There once was a ganker named tisi

A stunningly beautiful missy

To gank a gross miner

There is nothing finer, cept when they get all pissy

Are you in a player corporation? Do you prefer it or not and why?

Elves in Space. Call sign ELFIS. Who wouldn't want to be an elf among the stars?

NPC corps have higher taxes, so as any type of player it makes sense to make or join a player corp.

I'm a solo player in my own corp.

~~~
What role do you typically fill and why?
I barely play EVE any more, mostly read the forums sometimes, but when I did play I used to mine a lot, mainly because it let me do other things.
~~~

Why do you play EVE at all?

I have an abiding interest in where these worlds of imagination take us, at first filled with hope and promise, they seem to be falling by the wayside, as more solo orientated, or short term, games take over.

1. "One man corp" here. My corp is part of a very small but fairly old alliance of eve vets who I consider to be my friends after 5 years or so of knowing them. The corporation exists as a tax avoidance tool. The reason I am in my own corp rather than someone else's is because no one gets to touch my stuff and I don't need to beg anyone's permission to anchor towers, etc. So basically tax and crappy CCP group sharing/security mechanics.

2. I have many accounts and roles, and I like to think I can do most everything well at this point since I've been playing 12 years. I'm usually the "go to" person for the alliance. Need something built? I can build it. Need a staging tower anchored somewhere? I'll sneak in before downtime and anchor it. Need to borrow a ship for a roam? Chances are I have one I can lend you. Etc. I do everything from industry to PvP - except mining. I used to mine. I hate it now. If you see me in a mining ship I'm probably asleep or dead of terminal boredom so I'm an easy kill.

3. Good question. Why do I bother?

Mostly to hang out with people I know - my alliance buddies. We sit around and talk for a couple hours then maybe go make some people suffer. Then we laugh at how we wrecked them or - how we got wrecked... lol.

1. Player corp. I prefer it because we can do whatever we want with our corp, we are our own bosses.

2. Low sec pirate. I find hunting targets down, exploding them and occasionally getting some nice loot very enjoyable.

3. PvP sandbox, real losses, player driven economy, set your own goals experience - just the thrill of survival in the everyone versus everyone universe. There is no other game like Eve.

1. Of course, EVE is a game where your fun is directly tied to flying with other people

2. I kill sleepers and fly interceptors

3. Staring at ships and calming down after long work days

I prefer my alliance because I am bad, but none of us is as bad as all of us.

What role do you typically fill and why?
I blow people up.

Why do you play EVE at all?
I enjoy blowing people up.

1) No, I prefer to stay in NPC Corp because it allows me freedom to do what I want, when I want and where I want.
2) Explorer, being able to travel all over New Eden and finding hidden sites.
3) I started playing 8 yrs ago because Eve was the best SyFy space MMORPG available and it's still the best one available today.

Good luck with your project.

3. Why do you play EVE at all?

1) I actually am a player in a corporation and it is my personal way to play. I play this way because for one I suck at solo stuff and always feel kind of lost, without a sense of direction. Being in a corp gives me a sense of direction and a role to fulfill.

2) I will do anything PvP, though I have no logi skills. Whether that's flying basic frigate tackle, Caldari ECM (my personal favorite kind of cancer), or flying bigger more bling ships. As long as me and my buddies turn the other guy(s) into a fiery pile of trash I'm ok.

3) Many people have said and it may sound redundant, but it's the freedom. You can do literally anything you want. You like to play PvE? Knock yourself out. Roleplay? Sure! Betrayal? Sneaky! Fight other dudes in large scale combat? Absolutely! Go solo for pirate glory? Of course! Consequences? None ;)

I hope you learn a little more about proper research before you graduate. What do you intend to do with these random answers to completely arbitrary questions?
They aren't representative in any way.
