Who started the whole rap music thing?

I say it was Dr Suess.

Not the first, but if we're going to have an early rap thread: I've always been partial to this one.

I use to think that King Tim III is rapish funky whereas Rappers Delight is pure rap. Of course that's the commercial side, as rap had been played for years in live sessions.

Yeah these are marked as the 2 first hit singles of the rap genre according to the world of the internet though rap was considered a trend at the time in small venues. I knew to look in the 70's era, partly because of Rappers Paradise, and partly because I knew it was a spin off from disco/funk. The music scene had changed pretty radically between the 60's and 70's. I still say though that late 80's to early 90's was the best rap. You just can't beat NWA.

Rappers Delight is considered the first because it was pure rap (no singing) and it made mainstream radio airplay. It was by no means the first rap song written. Rap started in the early 70s in people's homes and clubs. The 15 minute version of rappers delight was first played on black radio then a 7 min version was made for white radio.
