Cosmos evolved into us basically. Sort of inception when you see sky and think about it. You cant really define intelligence. Its so elusive. If there is an advanced alien race out there who is sort of intelligent but would suprpass us in every aspect? Like they would be 100x better than us in logic and every aspect of thinking? What then? Are we intelligent enough for them to call us smartypants?

Why there is no intelligent octopus, or jellyfish that evolve and develop some technology ? Human live only 100-200k years ago, and other animals like jellyfish or etc already lived about million million million years ago.

WHY ?

I think the main problem with this question is that it almost implies that "intelligence" is somehow the target of evolution. It is not. Evolution is a simple process which just happens and changes species over time by random and semi-random changes in the DNA and a selection process given by the environment.

There is no target, no final form, no grand plan or idea.

In my opinion, the main reason why we can call ourselves "intelligent" and what separates us from almost every species is simply that we can exchange ideas with gesture, voice, drawings, later scripture etc. This started a cultural evolution whereby learned behavior not simply dies with the individual or has to be acquired via the extremely slow adoption process of the biologic evolution but can be passed on to the next generation.

Maybe there are other factors as well which are important, but i think the exchange of information is probably the most important one.

Also there where parallel evolution's of "intelligent" species which showed a similar ability to exchange ideas, but we basically killed them all (Neanderthal).

Because

Evolution is an ongoing process of trial and error, of which all modern primates are still a part.

And errors that result in survivability, get passed to the next generation.

That is why intelligence is an error.

My cynical view is that no real other intelligent life would want to evolve on earth because Humans don't like the competition and would probably murder it all before it could emerge. or slightly after emergence.

Maybe Bob only allowed one species on this planet to be 'intelligent' enough develop tools and technology. Because if there were others, they might crap up their own Earth habitat even faster.

By the way, there's a theory that we'll never encounter other intelligent life in the universe. Because before they could develop the tech for interstellar travel, they'd have degraded their own habitats so much that they'd have reverted to pre-tech or primitive tech. Depressing theory, I know.

(Some good posts and thoughts in this thread, btw, I'd say).

Actually, there is no proof that intelligent life, on a level similar to human like, have already not developed many times in earth history. Reason we dont have any proof, but it actually could be true, is that the petrified remains of intelligent creatures could be very hard to find, and obviously something what has happened, could have happened many times before. You would not find any remains on surface in forests. And if they evolved in oceans and were build like squids, you would not get much petrified remains either. The environment could have caused remains to vanish.
