What do ship type specific skills do? If I train caldari cruiser, for instance, all it says is that it increases my "skill at operating cruisers". What does that mean?

It depends on the specific hull.

Most hulls have bonuses that are dependent on the skill level you have.

So for example, looking at the Osprey (since you mention Caldari Cruiser):

You can see that the repair bonus increases for each level of Caldari Cruiser that you have trained.

Whereas for the Caracal, each level of skill affects the rate of fire of missile launchers and the velocity of the missiles:

Most hulls have bonuses that vary this way. The more skilled you are in terms of training, the better the ship performs in the areas it is bonused for.

Got it, thx. That's a significant boost. My Drake was at II and just trained it to IV so should be rocking.

Drakes are like minivans, they are really good at a getting you places safely but you don't want people actually seeing you in one.
