How do you stop targetting someone?

I just lost a rather expensive ship to CONCORD. The problem is that I wasn't trying to gank and didn't mean to shoot. I had weapons primed to fire, because, I was expecting legal targets to appear on grid. Unfortunately I locked the wrong target. Safety settings were set to red, as I had recently been in lowsec and hadn't switched them back.

So the question is this: How do you cancel the targeting process as the target is being locked? I haven't found a way to do this.

Two ways....

Click on the targeted ship in your top right and then click on the target with the red X through it.

OR

ctrl+left click on the target you accidentally targeted.

once its starting to lock a target you can't stop it from doing that.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

You can't stop the targeting process, you CAN stop the weapons being primed by clicking them once more. The real solution in this case is to simply expect it to go wrong at times and not have your safeties set to red (which is a dumb thing to do in high sec unless you want to gank and thus fully expect to lose the ship).

There's no reason to have safeties to red other than ganking, so set it to yellow or just green.

Thanks, it's a bit hard to do that when you have about 4 sets of aggressive modules primed to fire, with a sensor boosted frigate. I literally had 2 seconds to stop it. Yes, having safety on red was silly. But, i'm commonly moving between lowsec and highsec. It is a very easy thing to miss.

I am not aware of anything in low sec that requires you to set your safeties to red. I kill plenty of people with safeties set to yellow.

Don't feel bad, though. I learned about safeties the hard way, too.

If you like reading about low sec piracy or wormhole pvp, you might enjoy my blog.

^this, almost. The only thing that you need your safeties set to red in low sec is to allow you to kill pods that you don't have a legal right to kill. Note that if you engage someone, taking a sec hit and getting a suspect flag (in low sec), but they then fire back, you get a limited engagement timer and can move on to kill their pods without getting a criminal flag or needed anymore than safeties at yellow.

I personally leave my safeties at yellow permanently, I live in WH space and there and null it doesn't matter what your safeties are set to. In high sec I don't want to do anything that gets me concorded and in low I don't want the massive sec hit that comes from illegally shooting a pod. Yellow covers that perfectly.
