Is there even a way to search for a channel that is intended for this kind of special interest group (i.e. where you'd expect at least a few hundred people potentially interested in taking part)?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I couldn't find a better way to search for existing channels than typing in a possible name, and looking to see if I got a new channel or connected to an existing one.

(...)

You're not missing anything, there is neither a search function nor a list of chat channels. Hilarious, isn't it? Lol

There is both a search function and a list of chat channels.

In the Channels window, there are the options to "Join" or "Create". Where is the search?

+1 on how to search chat channels. Spent 45 mins in game trying to find it.

The only real way is to know how to spell it, or be told/linked/invited by someone else.

Most chat channels aren't password protected. Particularly in large Corps/Alliances, coalition channels that are for all members, many intel channels, etc.

So the lack of search gives each channel some opsec. Would be sort of busted if we could look up local intel channels while roaming and then just lurk in them.

Would be good if when making a channel, there was an opt in to a search function though. That would be a great improvement.

This is a sensible accommodation to the current setup of EVE.

But we could get the same result with another layer of grouping, separate from the current Corp/Alliance thing.

The tech's not so hard, but ofc for CCP there are always competing activities. OTOH I think it would be very high value. I've wanted this in every multiplayer game I've ever played (not that many though - only 3). In each case there was the usual strict hierarchy, and in each case I wanted something more flexible that didn't require the same kind of "loyalty" a Corp usually wants.

I won't mention any other MMO by name, but I have a perfect example from another one:

My "normal Corp" activities were a small part of the game for me. I spent over 80% of my time on something else (because it was the most fun the game offered to me - others liked other things ofc). I did this with people I knew and liked playing with, but we had no practical way to link up via a stable game-supported separate grouping. This cost us oåppåortunities to do things together, and made it a lot harder for pother people to find and join us.

I'm not there, *really* wanting a second layer of in-game organizations, with EVE yet, but I've only played for 8 weeks or so this time. It's likely I will get there later. On its own the lack of this feature is very unlikely to make me leave - but having it would have a moderate but significant effect on how likely it is that I stay.

Question

What is the difference between Gay and Queer. Ive always wondered. And for you old schoolers do you mind so many different groups being lumped in together

Gay is a blanket term used by straight society to cover a range of behaviours.
Queer is used in gay media to mean someone who wants their sexuality to be a social irritant that plays with expectations, it can be part of any other sexuality.
In the time of Juvenal, men were considered either passive or active, everything not a man was a potentially subdued victim. At that time there were so many eunuchs in the middle east they virtually constituted a third gender. It was only after the controversial topic of how babies were made was scientifically nailed down that the possibility of being queer came about.
So Gay generally means you prefer your own gender.
Queer means you prefer something other than social norms prescribe and you want to know what people think about that.
The current normalisation of a range of orientations works against queers, since where everything is ok, nothing can be outrageous.
TLDR the world is turning beige and grey.

Outrageos? I find many things people call outrageous, but those things are specific to any highly differentiated group of human beings. Homogenized groups are rather boring. Imagine army of identical robots, extreme case. I find it scary. Dehumanized. I like some differences across the spectrum, its so human like to argue, it spices up the life.

But in future we may move to some other topics to argue, because this field of discussion will be leveled out by culture and science.
As we dont discuss the advantages of spears over clubs sitting in cave anymore.

I am a completely straight male but wouldn't mind joining a LGBTQ community. In another MMO I play, there are quite a lot of gay players in my 'guild' and they are the best guys to talk to. Funny as hell too... Big smile

Well now I have 3 likes over a vanished comment about why non supported language chats were removed because of RL and chat misbehavior... Straight This thread is going places and I still can't figure why should someone ask for a ingame chat channel specific for sexual/love inclination in a place where the only thing is certain that we share is a) EVE Online and b) language.

I can see it as a grassroot move, strangers accidentally find themselves sharing an interest (like the loose LAGL community) and that gives birth to a chat channel, but I fail to see as the opposite, "I have a special interest, so where's my community?" Why should even be a community for everyone?

But there are things you would love to share with someone with similar outlook on life. Whats wrong with that? Cool

We would be discussing just different entry points, and the results would be the same. So I dont know why we even discuss it? Lets go straight to action. Cool

Have moved this to OOPE, considering it's also discussing stuff out of game.

This thread has had to be heavily moderated. It will remain open, so stop trolling in an attempt to have it closed. All that's going to do is make sure you lose your ability to post.
