CCP is keen on FREEDOM as the atmosphere, they don't make anyone do anything.

The experience of playing EVE for the last almost 10 years has taught me that some people can't handle the reality of other people being free to do as they please...

Freedom is an interesting fiction.

I mean it's a nice idea, but in reality we are all trapped. Incarcerated by our upbringing, our educations, our values, our mores and other relics of our various pasts. All guiding our choices.

For example in EVE there are rules for the forums, there are rules for the game, and there are even rule enforcers in the game called CONCORD. Freedom fighters you might call them.

Freedom is a fiction of Braveheart and other flag wavers.

How free are your decisions? Do you ever find yourself repeating things you've done before in EVE? Or is there a list of things you work through that you enjoy. Much like a hamster trapped on a wheel?

Freedom, for me, would involve being part of the creative process of EVE. Which is why I like forums, generally. Which is why I felt free to write this post, even knowing some predictable responses would unfold.

I understand that combat based games are exciting in their own right, but it's just with EVE I keep getting this nagging feeling that more is possible.

Everything what is prohibited is put in EULA. Its not a fiction.
The rest is freedom, and its not a fiction either. Whatever you do, and what is not prohibited, is not a fiction.

There's a feeling I get each and every time I stand under stars.

It's a wondering, a longing.

If EVE Online could capture that feeling, the future would brighten.

I understand that CCP is keen on gritty selfishness as the atmosphere for space, but I dunno.

I honestly do feel like CCP has captured the majesty of the vast vistas that are seen through instruments such as the hubble and others. They have done an exceptional job of speudomotion visualizations. Take for example moving through warp within system and watching the star in that system travel across the screen as you move to a safe spot or station as you evade a group of gankers.

The visualizations in fleet warp are, by far, my most favorite animation. How, at initiation, the ships move into position and reach a static state, fluidly, in a very believable manner.

The light of the stars within each system is amazing. The one thing I'd love to see CCP do is a binary star solar system. Maybe in null sec. Maybe make them systems that are highly coveted for resources for mining. Something that mirrors what is theorized within astrophysics. The amount of resources available in a binary star solar system would be immense.

I honestly feel like the horizon is an open book with regard to the kinds of things that could be put into the game as far as visual affect.

What we have now, to me, is truly breathtaking as we pilot our ships from on point to the next.

Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm just easily satisfied by what's in the game now....

Yea I'm sure some flaming troll is going to make a valiant attempt of turning my opinion into a piece of stale Swiss cheese...

Doesn't matter, nothing will change my personal and subjective feeling of the awe of the universe as I fly through the game.....

I think that's at the bottom of many issues that pop up on the forums. Some of us can appreciate what we have now, can appreciate a thing for what it is. Sure , more is better, but it (EVE) is plenty good right now, at this moment.

Others...well sometimes, not so much (lol). Their focus is on what could be rather than what is. I think it's easy to know where I fall in that spectrum, if all you ever do is think about how great the future could be, you are probably missing out on how awesome right now is.

Can't blame people for disliking space anarchy when they would rather have space communism or space socialism.

Thanks to James 315 they even have space democracy now. Now that is a good thing to have

It is kind of awe-inspiring in Eve when you set your route and you see those lines connecting to all the star systems you're going to go through. Like, wow man, all of those stars displayed in the background really are places in the game.

If you dismiss every person who disagrees with you on forums then you end up with an echo chamber, not a forum.

But that's not particular to these forums, we all tend to like people like ourselves and huddle together against others. And you end up with the same old discussions taking place in the same old way over the same old topics, every day. All the different people having accepted the invitation to leave town.

Funnily enough we get this division, because everyone likes to be liked.

Alternatively a game maker can dismiss the opinions of those who are always content, because they will always be content. Let's not worry about the forum posters, they only ever say the same old things. Let's check out that shiny new social media thing! I hear Twitter is really bopping!

I look at games like Lego, and Minecraft, brands worth billions. They focus on giving tools to people for making things. EVE has that too, but without the flexibility.

For example, could I paint my ship yellow and operate as a taxi business in EVE? Nope. CCP would worry that I'd paint a big penis on the side and all EVE players would be horrified, subscriptions would plummet and Finland would declare war on CCP.

It's that tight control over what players can do that I don't think of as freedom, and I don't think it will lead to growth. However I do think that the learning cliff of EVE is fine, and that the grim atmosphere of EVE is fine, we all get sick of hype. No Man's Sky anyone?

Learning is the key to keeping games fresh. Once we learn the algorithms, things get old, we look for the new.

EVE maintains some of that with the treadmill approach, where other players come along and wreck your stuff, then you start anew. Re-balancing items also keeps things fresh, at least from a combat perspective.

This discussion here won't change anything.

EVE is making plenty of money, and change can be risky.

But I still feel that compulsion to talk about what might be up in that night sky.
