What am I talking about:

If you go to the Eve site (You must be logged in on an Alpha account or not logged in at all) you will see that CCP is offering a deal for Alphas ONLY to sub with a very good deal.

https://secure.eveonline.com/upgrade/

Alphas can sub for the whole year at only $8.33/mo yet when I logged in to try to renew my sub on my accounts which have been the equivalent of an Omega for years, I do not get the same deal.

Normally I do not care about how CCP prices skins, plex, etc. since I just pay for my accounts, but come on. It seems the ONLY way a player who has been playing for years can get this deal is if they never actually subbed and just paid in plex.

I would also not really care if it was a month or two max, but when an Alpha can sub for $30+ less than me per account, that just does not feel right.

Can we get a Dev or someone to clarify what is going on here? Is this just a temp thing or is there something we are missing here?

I have to admit I was wondering when this thread would start. There's always that one guy who has been living under a rock his whole life and has no understanding of how marketing works.

That it's an offer for new players, it's called marketing and I see nothing wrong in it. Want to use that offer ? Then just make an new account and have a full year at a discounted price.

This is a one-time offer, to incentivize alphas upgrading to omega. They don't get to have cheap subs forever, just the first sub payment.

If you're really that hellbent on getting the discount offer, I suppose you could always create a new alpha account, sub it, and transfer your character in. Probably still cheaper overall even when you account for the transfer fee.

EDIT: Bonus points if you use the buddy system to create the new alpha. You get a PLEX on your original account if the new one subs, I think?

I get how marketing works Epeen as I have worked directly with that department for years on the finance side of my company. You try to get someone to start using your product and then start paying for it. You get them "hooked" through incentives which is what this is, but when offering this for a whole year that term makes no sense as a "hook". Eve is a month-month game. You want to get them playing and then start paying full price as soon as possible, so a couple months offer would be expected.

The likely reason that this long term offer is being presented is simply for a short term influx of cash at the expense of long term cash gained (a valid tactic yes), but it is a short-term tactic only used to boost short-term performance. If you wanted a big short term cash influx, you would probably get more offering it to Omegas than Alphas.

This offer is older than the Alpha Clones. I got the same offer when I startet in June.

You apparently don't get how marketing works. You give an incentive for one month, they can quit after a month. You give an incentive and lock them in for a year, you get a year's worth of revenue, guaranteed. It also ensures that they log in on and off for a year, which increases the chance that they find a decent group to fly with and keep playing after the year is over.

Because it's a one-time only offer for subbing for the first time?

This isn't even the first time CCP have done something like this, there have been *several* Steam sales over the years where you could buy a starter pack with like 2 months for $10 plus some other stuff like skillbooks IIRC.

How do discount on PLEX as a vet:

Go use your vet SP pool to fly a big ship, earn lots of ISK, and buy a PLEX for ISK off of someone who buys them in 50 packs from CCP to feed their Titan addiction.

that's not how marketing works.
a bad product won't sell, even if you give it gratis to people.
making them pay less etc will be seen as a scam to capture them in the system.

making people playing something they payed for but that they don't like won't do any good.
bad marketing cuz the first thing they'll do will be telling to all their friends: yea i've tried, the offer was only "a scam" to take you in the system.

WHAT, a new player can one time sub for an average of $2.50 per month less than I can? I am or will be outraged by this!

This! I subbed in Dec. last year and I also got a decent discount. This is nothing especially for Alphas but for your first sub.

Not really. If you get people to agree to smaller things, they are more likely to agree to larger. If you try to sell a $15/mo subscription right away, many people will say no. If you get them to agree to a free Alpha, they are more likely to give it a shot because "hey, I want to try other race's ships, and what's $8/mo anyway". A year later, they are still in the game, it auto-renews for $15/mo and chances are they don't give it a second thought.

It's a good strategy.

Abusing that system can, and will, get both accounts banned. Not a smart move at all.

This is EXACTLY how marketing works. Just because you can't grasp it, doesn't mean it doesn't work. It just means you are naive.

I'm not aware of any case where merely buddy-inviting oneself has ever been classified as abuse absent some additional aggravating behavior. It's... extremely common.

Because they are trying to bring in new subs to the game. Next question!
