AUTZ - Failure against US and EU?

Hi there,

I love this game! The look, the feel and the tech is great!

And here comes the but.

Playing from any place further away from the server adds lag time to how quickly one's response is registered and auctioned in any given situation. In normal PVE it is easier to compensate and make a success, but in PVP, which is a big part of this game, it is not so easy. Let me quote a personal example: I wanted to go to Thera, so I jumped onto Eve Scout, got the closest system, and went there. Then scanned down the wormhole entrance and jumped in......and died!

https://zkillboard.com/kill/58338351/

The instance was still loading at my end by the time I was podded. I was in a destroyer and was killed by two other destroyers without even having an opportunity to launch drones or even target anyone! I did not even got to see my clone float in space! I really think that even though I would still have died, I should have had the chance to defend myself.

I am sure there are lots of friendly and not so friendly advice out there, but those are the facts. PVP when you are in the AUTZ can only happen against other AUTZ players to have any kind of level playing field.

So I will go back to running lvl 4 missions and doing anomolies in High security space for a while, and keep trying to be better at PVP.

Cheers,

Andrea

mmmm i'm not sure...

i think it depends on your internet connection... i mean... look at zarvox... he is AUTZ, isn't he?
and he pvp normally without problems... except some griffin from time to time xD

It's 99 % about Internet connection speed. What's your speed OP ?

It does.

OP, the browser has a tool in it for network diagnostics. When you run it, it has a few tests, one of them being 'basic'. It's a ping test. I live in Australia, and when I run it, I get on my crappy ADSL 2+ connection 40-50ms consistently for all three servers. Right now, my ADSL has a voltage issue and we're using prepaid mobile broadband backup. On that, the worst I get is still under 100ms. I have few issues PVP'ing and as much is evident on my own kb. OP, this isn't an AU problem, it's a 'you' problem, and by you I mean your own internet service and/or setup.

Yeah I sometimes get lag. **** happens.

In general it's ok, but it's not CCPs issue.

I just use it to blame all my PvP losses on Big smile (Just joking....I'm just **** at PvP)

If it takes fully 1 minute for the system to load, which I assume it did for your just jumped cloak to time out, that's not an AU lag problem.

It's not a server problem either. There are a lot of places the signal can slow down.

From the east coast for example, the shortest path is the trans-pacific cable to the US, across the US and thhen the trans-Atlantic cable to the UK and back again.

Some many exchanges involved in the different paths that it's not CCPs issue. The server can be perfectly fine and it can still take a long time occasionally.

I am lucky to get less than 100ms on a ping test to a local server.......

I'm in Canberra. We have the crappiest internet in the country I think. My pings can be >300ms. We deserve it too.

I've never checked ping but i live with 7 to 13 fps and kill people.
Mentioned before how i was with iiNET and pvp was bad, lag was bad, everything was bad. They checked cable right up to the wall of my house, had three technicians checking stuff.
Switched to another internet, pvp stats did better.

I was gonna type a coherent post but because I already know all the stupid things you are gonna say I'll just say that you can not log in eve no matter where you are on this planet, unless it's YOUR internet connection / PC.

Brainstorm: Your lag got nothing to do with eve online.

It's always the Australians who seem to complain about these kinds of thing...if it's not "Downtime cuts into my evening!", it's "I'm so far away from the rest of the civilised world that my ping times are atrocious, there are spiders in my CD-ROM drive, and Mad Max is lingering outside!"

Until I upgraded my PC I thought my internet was the cause of me lagging behind lock times on gate camps etc (compared to US & UK players).

Since the upgrade I no longer am last to lock & shoot, so from an anecdotal point of view that may be the cause of your problem.

That said I believe us Aussies players have a small disadvantage in terms of server response time but until someone actually measures that against some acceptable benchmark it remains nothing more than myth & suspicion. If there is a small disadvantage then that is far outweighed by all the advantages us Aussies have both as EvE players & with so many other things.

I don't think you have correctly assessed what happened. When you jump into a WH, you still get a 1 minute 'gate' cloak. If your client didn't load for over a minute, there is something seriously wrong with your internet. A 300 ms ping or even a couple of seconds lag, isn't going to cause that.

Your main antagonist was in an Arty Svipul. Arty Svipuls have a big locking advantage and a large alpha. He would have locked you first and then two shotted you, taking perhaps six seconds to cycle for the second shot, during which time the Sabre locked you and got some damage on. Your fit had virtually no buffer (1 trimark) and was a gift for high alpha damage opponents.

You had no chance of getting your drones deployed before you died, if you locked and fired before trying to drop your drones you might have got one shot off in time, but 1 salvo from 5 x 150mm Railguns would have only tickled him.

Your only real chance would have been to select the wormhole while cloaked, hit approach/jump and fire up your overheated AB. If you were lucky enough to come out really close to the WH, you might have made it back before the Svipul got the second shot off, but to be frank unlikely. You would have had a better chance with a MWD.

Thera is notorious for having it's wormholes camped, what you did was suicide in that fit.

You would need to have obscene ping delays for Aussie to be at an actual disadvantage in a game with a server tick of 1 second.

EVE is not an FPS, so high ping times will not prevent you getting 360 noscope headshots or whatever. The server operates on a 1s clock, so while a high ping time may pish your reactions onto the second second, it is not a major disadvantage.

Long load times will be due to low memory, slow hard drives, and too much other stuff happening on your computer and internet connection.

I have 32Gb RAM and SSD, so all my clients end up loading the destination system before the jump animation is finished. I live in Canberra, in a suburb with the worst Internet in Australia (out of all the places with wired Internet), usually 2Mbps ADSL with around a 250–350ms ping to the servers. I do not PvP much because I suck at organising a garage full of ships ;)

So if I was you I would check your machine's performance: maximum disk I/O, how much RAM you have available (a minimum of 8 GB is where I would start) and graphics detail (turning this down will reduce overall load, regardless of FPS). If you have an anaemic graphics card you will be punishing your system even more: the system requirements are for the bare minimum system to run EVE with potato graphics quality.
